The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani was named National League Player of the Month for May on Tuesday, becoming the first Major League Baseball player to claim the monthly honor multiple times in both the NL and the American League.
The two-way star secured his second monthly award with the Dodgers after getting his first last September, adding to four AL accolades he won while playing for the Los Angeles Angels.
The 30-year-old led MLB with his 15 home runs in May, when he had two games with two homers, as he tied both his personal and Dodgers franchise records for most homers in a month.
He also led the big leagues with 31 runs scored, while his 27 RBIs were second in the NL as he batted .309.
With his sixth, Ohtani rewrote his own record for most MLB monthly awards won by a Japanese player.
Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees won the AL Player of the Month after the right fielder batted .364 with 11 homers and 18 RBIs.
The San Francisco Giants’ Robbie Ray was named the NL Pitcher of the Month after posting a 4-1 record with a 1.38 ERA, while Kris Bubic of the Kansas City Royals won the AL title after going 3-0 with a 0.56 ERA.
