Primoz Roglic has agreed to race the Rwanda Road World Championships as Tadej Pogacar’s teammate.
The Rwanda Road World Championships are looking increasingly more promising for Tadej Pogacar, who is hoping to retain the gold medal he won a year ago in Zurich, Switzerland.
In addition to the already confirmed absences of rivals of the caliber of Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, Mathieu van del Poel, and Matteo Jorgenson, Primoz Roglic, who was initially not going to the World Cup, has now accepted the role of being a domestique for Tadej Pogacar and will attend the first World Cup in history on African soil.
The best cyclist in the history of the Vuelta a España, alongside Roberto Heras, with four victories, has agreed to compete in the World Championships in Rwanda, even though he knows that the leader of the Slovenian national team is Tadej Pogacar, and a legend like him will have to work as a domestique.
Primoz Roglic will compete in Rwanda in one of the worst years of his career, having only managed to win the Volta a Catalunya, but in the Grand Tours his performances were limited to an 8th place in the Tour de France and a retirement in the Giro d’Italia.
Primoz Roglic will arrive at the World Championships in Rwanda without much competitive fitness, as his last competition was the San Sebastián Classic on September 2nd, and he won’t compete again until September 29th at the World Championships. The Red Bull-Bora rider plans to finish the season at the Giro di Lombardia, another event where Tadej Pogacar will be present, but where each rider will be defending their respective teams.
Tadej Pogacar’s main rivals for gold at the World Championships in Rwanda will be Belgian Remco Evenepoel, Australian Jai, Irishman Ben Healy, Spaniard Juan Ayuso, and Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz.
