Oleksandr Usyk has beaten six Brits in the ring, most notably both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.
The elite Ukrainian has boxed 24 rounds with both men, winning and defending the unified heavyweight titles against ‘AJ’ in 2021/22 before becoming undisputed against Fury earlier this year and then repeating the result this weekend in Riyadh. Whilst Fury was more competitive in his fights, he was also hurt the most during a spectacular ninth round in his first meeting with the southpaw technician.
That latest unanimous points win over ‘The Gypsy King’ cements Usyk as the best heavyweight of a generation, perhaps fighter entirely, and fans will watch keenly as he decides his next move.
As for Fury, there’s little doubt that the biggest fight out there for him is a long-awaited clash with Joshua, albeit one with much less on the line than it would have had in the past.
With Joshua coming off a loss to IBF Heavyweight Champion Daniel Dubois and Fury now out of the title picture, neither man has a bigger fight on offer.
Should it happen, Usyk told Boxing King Media that ‘AJ’ is the favourite, even despite saying Fury gave him tougher nights.
“Maybe Anthony Joshua. Maybe [on] points.”
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has made it clear that there are just two important fights for his man – Fury and a rematch with Daniel Dubois.
Dubois is set to defend his belt against Joseph Parker on February 22 and then likely to either have a mandatory or perhaps look to face Usyk again after losing by stoppage in 2023 for undisputed.
That clears the path for Fury vs Joshua, once the biggest fight in the sport of boxing and certainly still up there despite the recent blemishes on the record of each man. The match-up will no longer crown the best heavyweight in the division, but fans believe it must happen before the pair retire.
