Hungary’s forward Barnabas Varga was rushed to the hospital following a dangerous collision with Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
In the 73rd minute of the EURO 2024 Group A match between Scotland and Hungary, with the score tied at 0-0, Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga suffered a severe collision with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
During an aerial duel, Varga’s head collided violently with Gunn’s body as both players contested for the ball. Varga fell to the ground unconscious immediately after the impact. Medical staff rushed onto the field with a stretcher covered with a shield to prevent the crowd and media from seeing the critical state of Varga.
Hungary’s captain Dominik Szoboszlai was seen teary-eyed as he assisted the medical team in bringing the stretcher onto the pitch to tend to his injured teammate. Both Hungarian and Scottish players appeared deeply concerned for Varga’s condition as he was taken to the hospital urgently.
Fans in the stands applauded as Varga was carried off the field, praying for his quick recovery. BBC shared a heartfelt message: “We will always stand by you, Varga.”
Update: Out of Immediate Danger
As of 4:30 AM Vietnam time on June 24, the Hungarian Football Association reported that Varga had regained consciousness and was in stable condition, no longer in immediate danger.
Returning to the match, after two rounds, Scotland was third in the group with one point, while Hungary was last with zero points. Both teams needed a victory to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.
Hungary dominated Scotland in this match, and following Varga’s severe injury, the Eastern European team intensified their attacks. It seemed as though Hungary was playing for Varga. A dramatic conclusion came in the 90+10th minute when substitute Kevin Csoboth scored the lone goal, giving Hungary a 1-0 victory.
