UEFA gives Barcelona a hot reward for Pedri Euro’s injury

Barcelona is set to receive substantial compensation from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) following Pedri’s injury during Euro 2024.

Pedri, who played less than 10 minutes in the Euro 2024 quarter-final between Germany and Spain, was injured by Toni Kroos and left the field in tears. According to European press reports, Pedri could face up to 6 weeks on the sidelines.

In light of such serious injury, UEFA will activate player and club protection clauses. Specifically, a player sustaining an injury over 28 days while on national team duty enables UEFA to compensate his club. This compensation can reach up to 20,000 euros per day and increases based on the player’s salary during his absence. The maximum compensation per club in such cases is 7.5 million euros.

This compensation begins from the 29th day of the player’s injury and continues until his return to play or full recovery. In Pedri’s case, Barcelona will receive compensation starting from August 3rd until his return to the field or confirmed fitness. Payments are calculated per day and made in a lump sum.

While some experts acknowledge this as beneficial for Barcelona, they emphasize that the primary focus should be on supporting injured players rather than their clubs. Beyond the physical and financial aspects, players may also face significant psychological challenges when unable to compete in major tournaments like Euro 2024.
