Ukrainian boxer Alexander Usyk excellently defeated British opponent Tyson Fury, leaving Fury with a bruised face. This morning, the highly anticipated match took place in Saudi Arabia. Fury and Usyk, both undefeated world boxing champions, entered the ring with perfect records. In particular, Usyk holds 3 major titles: WBA, IBF and WBO.
The match was tense. Both fighters cautiously probed each other in the first seven rounds, landing heavy blows while also being wary of their opponent’s counterattacks. Statistics for the entire fight show that Usyk threw 407 punches, landing 170 of them — a 42% accuracy rate — while Fury threw more punches with 496 but only connected with 157, resulting in a modest 32% accuracy rate.
By round 1/8, Usyk stunned Fury with a series of punches to the face, causing the British boxer to bleed and become disoriented. Going into the ninth round, Fury tried to keep his distance and take advantage of his longer range, but Usyk continued to dominate, nearly knocking Fury out with a series of punches.
The remaining three rounds saw Fury adopt a defensive strategy, while Usyk’s offense was hampered by fatigue. With no knockout until the end of the 12 rounds, Usyk was declared the winner by the judges due to the higher score.
As a result, the Ukrainian boxer now holds all four heavyweight titles: WBA, IBF, WBC and WBO. He became the undisputed heavyweight world champion and the first to achieve this since 1999.
However, Alexander Usyk had to pay a heavy price for his victory. He missed the post-match press conference because he immediately had to go to the hospital. There is suspicion that he may have suffered a broken jaw. Confirmation is still pending regarding the health condition of the Ukrainian boxer.
