Tyson Fury regrets ‘having too much fun’ fighting local amateur boxer Oleksandr Usyk, “enjoying it too much and you paid the ultimate price”

Tyson Fury has spoken in-depth for the first time since his loss to Oleksandr Usyk last month.

Fury and Usyk battled it out to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis nearly 25 years ago.

The fight was an enthralling back and forth encounter where both men enjoyed success. The biggest moment came in round nine when Usyk had ‘The Gypsy King’ out on his feet with only the ropes keeping him up from the canvas. After an anxious wait on the scorecards the Ukrainian took home all the belts with a split decision victory.

Having watched the fight back Fury believes he won comfortably, only giving the Ukrainian three rounds one of which was a 10-8 score.

“I’ve watched the fight back lots of times and still got the same answer, I thought I won the fight, I thought I did enough. One of the judges had me winning by a round, one had him winning by a round and that was the final decision, so it was what it was. There is no good in crying over spilt milk, it’s done now. I believe everything happens for a reason.

I thought I boxed the head right off him for most of the rounds. He landed a good punch in round 8 and busted my noise and in round 9 he had a 10-8 round so that’s two and I give him round 10, but other than that I didn’t give him any other rounds. I give him 4 rounds in the fight.”

Fury believes he can only get his hand raised next time if he gets a stoppage.

“I’ve got to get him out of there because I’m not going to get a decision, which is unfortunate because it’s hard enough to win a fight just by winning it, let alone knowing you have to knock someone out. I’m confident and looking forward to the challenge.’

The former champion says he ‘paid the ultimate price’ for enjoying himself too much.

‘It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I was lighting him up with three and four punch combinations and laughing at him.

My problem was I probably had too much fun, it was probably too easy, at times it was too easy like I was in there with a local amateur boxer and I was enjoying it too much and messing around and you pay the ultimate price in round 9 where I got I got clipped and that’s what happens when you have too much fun.”

Fury will get a chance to avenge his only career defeat on December 21 when the two top fighters in the division will run it back once more.
