Boxing fans may witness an all-British showdown this September if Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois can reach an agreement to face off at Wembley Stadium.
Dubois is riding high after a career-best win over Filip Hrgovic, where he captured the IBF Interim World title. This victory positioned him as the mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk, despite losing to Usyk last year.
Usyk is set for a December rematch with Tyson Fury, following their undisputed thriller. This may force him to drop the title if he cannot fulfill his IBF obligations.
Should the belt become vacant, there is potential for Joshua to face Dubois for it. Tony Bellew, speaking to IFL TV, predicted a dominant performance from Joshua if the match happens, despite acknowledging Dubois’ recent achievements.
“Daniel Dubois – I can’t write him off ever again unless he’s facing AJ, Usyk, or Fury. If he fights AJ next, it ends quickly and brutally for Dubois. He took 56 clean right hands in the first four [Hrgovic] rounds. You’ll get away with one or two with AJ, but then you just go to sleep,” said Bellew.
“Amazing heart, amazing resilience, and huge courage were shown against Filip Hrgovic. But it’s one thing for Hrgovic to hit you; it’s another for a wrecking machine like Anthony Joshua to hit you.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Dubois is one of three frontrunners for the fight, but nothing solid has been agreed upon yet.
