🛑“THEY WERE NOT FAIR TO ME!”: Piastri criticized McLaren for their biased and unethical behavior in using all technical resources (especially suspension) and support to give Norris an advantage in Formula 1.

Formula 1 has always been a highly competitive arena, where speed, strategy, and teamwork converge to define champions. However, after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a controversy erupted in the paddock, casting a spotlight on the McLaren team and its star driver, Oscar Piastri. The Australian, leader in the drivers’ championship, made no bones about his frustration after the race, bluntly declaring, “They weren’t honest with me!” His criticism directly points to the team’s strategic decisions, which, he claims, benefited his teammate Lando Norris. This sparked a debate about the ethics within the Papaya team and its priorities in the title fight.

The incident that sparked the controversy occurred during the Silverstone race, marked by variable weather conditions and multiple safety car stoppages. Piastri, who was leading the race, was given a 10-second penalty for a maneuver deemed “irregular” after braking abruptly on the Hangar Straight, forcing Max Verstappen to take evasive action to avoid a collision. The penalty, which Piastri received during his pit stop on lap 43, cost him the victory, which ultimately went to Norris. What most angered the Australian, however, was not just the penalty, but also what he perceived as unequal treatment by McLaren, particularly regarding the allocation of technical resources such as suspension upgrades, which had been designed for months and, he claimed, were intended to give Norris an advantage.

Piastri didn’t hesitate to express his frustration as he stepped out of his car. “It’s like you can’t brake anymore after the safety car. Five laps earlier, I had done it without any problems, but this time I got a penalty. I won’t say much more about it because then I’d be in trouble, but I don’t think the penalty is fair,” he said in a subdued but disappointed tone. His most striking message came over the radio at the end of the race, when he suggested the team swap positions with Norris to right what he considered an injustice. “I know it’s a big request, but if you don’t think it’s fair either, we have to swap positions and race,” said the Australian, aware that his request was more an act of defiance than a realistic expectation.

Team principal Andrea Stella responded to Piastri’s criticism and defended McLaren’s position. According to Stella, the penalty was “very severe” and didn’t take into account factors such as the late withdrawal of the safety car or the track conditions. “We believe it was right to discuss the situation after the race and thoroughly consider the opinions of the drivers involved. Oscar gave his opinion, and we appreciate it, as we always encourage our drivers to express their opinions,” Stella explained. However, the Italian made it clear that the team had decided not to change the race order. He argued that by switching to dry tires, it was only right to maintain the “natural order” after the penalty.

The controversy doesn’t stop at the track. According to sources close to the team, McLaren has invested significant resources into optimising Norris’ car, particularly with the suspension upgrades tested since the Canadian Grand Prix. These upgrades, developed over two and a half months, are said to have given Norris an advantage in stability and cornering speed, something Piastri perceives as a lack of fairness. One user on the X-platform pointed out this disparity, stating: “McLaren has favoured Norris over Piastri since Canada, focusing solely on technical improvements to his car.” While this information has not yet been officially confirmed, it has fuelled speculation about possible favouritism within the team.

The background to this situation is not new. Since joining McLaren in 2023, following a controversial departure from Alpine, Piastri has proven to be a formidable competitor, but also a driver who values transparency and honesty. His move to McLaren, which sparked a legal battle with Alpine, had already called his “integrity” into question, according to then-Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer. McLaren CEO Zak Brown, however, came to Piastri’s defense at the time, questioning Szafnauer’s credibility and emphasizing the clarity of the Australian’s contract with McLaren. “There was no evidence. We had a valid contract, registered with the CRB in July, and everything was clear,” Brown declared in a 2022 statement that resonated with the paddock.

The relationship between Piastri and Norris is one of McLaren’s strengths. Both drivers have maintained a dynamic of mutual respect, supported by the team’s “Papaya Rules,” which permit racing on track as long as it doesn’t harm the team’s interests. However, incidents like Norris’s collision with Piastri in Canada and Piastri’s aggressive maneuver at Turn 4 in Austria have challenged this harmony. Brown emphasized during a recent press conference that both drivers can fight for the title and remain friends. “The relationship between them is fantastic. They’ve shown they can race hard but fair, and I think they’ll remain good teammates,” he stated.

Despite Brown’s words, the situation at Silverstone left its mark on Piastri. His calm demeanor, dubbed by some as “Australia’s silent killer,” gave way to a rare display of suppressed anger. Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle summed it up perfectly: “This is the first time we’ve seen Oscar’s furious side. That competitive fire has always been there, but now we’ve seen it raw.” This episode reveals Piastri’s determination not to give up in his championship fight, even if it means going up against his own team.

With the Formula 1 season now halfway through, McLaren leads the Constructors’ Championship with 460 points, well ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes. Piastri, with 216 points, maintains a 15-point lead over Norris in the Drivers’ Championship, but internal tensions could complicate matters. The next race at Spa-Francorchamps, on July 27, will be crucial to see whether McLaren can balance the two drivers’ efforts or whether Piastri’s criticism forces the team to rethink its strategy.

Piastri’s case not only raises doubts about McLaren’s decisions, but also raises broader questions about the ethics of Formula 1. To what extent should a team prioritize one driver over another? Is it fair that technical improvements benefit one driver more than another in the title race? The answer isn’t simple, but it’s clear that Piastri refuses to remain silent. His courage to speak out, despite knowing his request wouldn’t be honored, demonstrates that the Australian is not only a talent on the track, but also a driver who demands respect and honesty. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on McLaren to see how they navigate this internal storm and whether they can maintain unity on their road to success
