Tennis-Djokovic lets rip after majestic performance, Zverev bows out “on one leg”

Emotions ran high for Novak Djokovic on Monday following his dominant three-set victory over young Dane Holger Rune in the fourth round of Wimbledon, while Alexander Zverev faced an unexpected defeat.

After a tentative start in his previous matches, seven-time champion Djokovic displayed top form against Rune, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. However, the match’s notable moment wasn’t his stellar performance but rather Djokovic’s heated post-match interview where he criticized Wimbledon fans for disrespecting him.

Expressing irritation over fans cheering Rune with chants of “Ruuune!”, Djokovic exclaimed, “To all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a goooooood night! Goooooood night! Goooooood night!”

When the interviewer suggested the chants were merely in support of Rune, Djokovic disagreed firmly, stating, “I don’t accept that, no, no, no. I know they were cheering for Rune but that’s an excuse to boo.”

Despite the incident, Djokovic emphasized his focus on respectful fans who appreciate tennis and the effort players put in. “I’ve played in much more hostile environments. Trust me, you guys, you guys can’t touch me,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Centre Court also witnessed a dramatic upset as Alexander Zverev, seeded fourth, fell to Taylor Fritz in a five-set thriller. Despite leading and serving exceptionally, Zverev, visibly hindered by a leg injury, succumbed 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3.

Zverev, who played with a protective support due to a recent knee injury, admitted, “It was fairly obvious that I wasn’t 100% today,” citing a tear in his knee capsule and bone bruising from an MRI scan.

The match marked the 35th five-set encounter at Wimbledon this year, tying a record for the most at any Grand Slam since the professional era began in 1968. Fritz’s victory also signaled hope for American men, with two players—Tommy Paul and Fritz—reaching the quarter-finals, the first time since 2000.

In other matches, Australian Alex De Minaur defeated Arthur Fils, while Italian Lorenzo Musetti set up a clash with Fritz. In the women’s draw, Elena Rybakina advanced after Anna Kalinskaya retired hurt, setting up a match against Elina Svitolina.
