Surprise for fans of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Revealing his rematch with John Gotti III
Floyd Mayweather Jr. and John Gotti III are set to face off once again in a highly anticipated rematch. Mayweather announced that the bout is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, in Mexico City, marking a little over a year since their tumultuous encounter in June 2023.
Their first matchup at the FLA Live Arena, aside from its controversial ending, was largely uneventful. The fight was stopped in the sixth round when referee Kenny Bayless disqualified Gotti III for excessive holding of Mayweather. The decision sparked fury in Gotti III, who tried to initiate a continuation of the fight, leading to a full-scale brawl in the ring.
Following the incident, the DBPR Florida Athletic Commission handed Gotti III a six-month suspension, while Mayweather faced no sanctions. Gotti III expressed his frustration on social media, calling Mayweather a “Punk b*tch” and declaring him an “enemy for life.” He also mentioned Conor McGregor, suggesting he needed backup.
However, the tension seemed to have cooled when Gotti III later confirmed on The MMA Hour that he and ‘Money’ had resolved their differences and were actively discussing a rematch.
Gotti III, who is the grandson of the infamous Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, initially made his mark in mixed martial arts, boasting an impressive 5-0 record before facing his first defeat to Nick Alley at a CES event in 2020. He then switched to boxing, where he secured consecutive victories against Albert Tulley and Alex Citrowske, setting the stage for his first exhibition match against Mayweather.
Floyd Mayweather, who retired with a flawless professional record of 50-0, has continued to entertain fans globally through various exhibition matches. He has competed against a range of personalities including WWE superstar Logan Paul, Japanese kickboxing phenom Nasukawa Tenshin, former sparring partner Don Moore, RIZIN star Mikuru Asakura, and Deji Olatunji, the younger brother of YouTube star KSI. These exhibitions have kept ‘Money’ in the spotlight as he extends his legacy beyond traditional competitive boxing.
