Derek Chisora has cast doubt on whether Oleksandr Usyk will fight Tyson Fury again. The Ukrainian narrowly won their first fight via split decision, securing one of the most gripping heavyweight title fights in history in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Despite a rematch clause in their contract, Chisora believes the fight may not happen.
Less than a week after Usyk’s victory, Chisora pointed to the IBF’s plan to strip Usyk of their heavyweight title as a potential obstacle. According to Boxing Social, the 40-year-old British contender suggested that Usyk might quit the heavyweight division and return to cruiserweight if stripped of his title.
“There’s no point in bothering with a rematch because the undisputed is done,” Chisora said. “I heard a rumor, I’m gonna start this rumor anyway. Oleksandr is dropping down to cruiserweight.”
Usyk previously reigned as the undisputed cruiserweight champion before moving up to heavyweight, where he has won all six of his fights. While a return to cruiserweight would require shedding two stone to meet the 200-pound limit, the biggest and most lucrative fights for Usyk remain in the heavyweight division. Rematches with Fury and Anthony Joshua would likely yield the highest purses of his career.
Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, recently expressed confidence in the rematch, stating that it could be even better than the original fight. “They both know each other; they’ve shared the ring and they’ll be looking to use what they’ve gained from the fight as an advantage to beat their opponent,” Warren said. He added that Fury is eager for the rematch: “He believes in himself, and it would cement his legacy. Everyone out there thinks Usyk is the best, so let’s see what Tyson does. He rang me and said he wants the rematch.”
If everything goes as planned, Fury vs. Usyk 2 could take place in less than five months, potentially resolving any doubts and providing another thrilling chapter in their rivalry.
