Princess Kate And Prince William Urged To Follow King Charles’s ‘Pushback Against Tradition’

Royal commentator Gareth Russell has urged Princess Kate and Prince William to follow King Charles’s recent efforts to modernize the monarchy by “pushing back against tradition.” This call for change comes as the Prince and Princess of Wales currently do not have a permanent residence in Wales, a situation that has drawn criticism regarding their connection to the region.

During their early years of marriage, William and Kate lived in Anglesey, Wales, but unlike King Charles, who maintained a residence at the Llwynywermod estate in Carmarthenshire when he was the Prince of Wales, they no longer have a dedicated home in the principality. This has led some to question their commitment to their roles as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Russell highlighted the symbolic and practical importance of maintaining a residence in Wales. In an interview with GB News, he stated, “It’s very important that the Prince and Princess of Wales have a home in their principality. What has been a frequent criticism of Wales’s place in the Union for many years is that the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales are used for the heir to the throne, but it doesn’t traditionally have many ties to Wales, much less time spent there.”

He continued, “King Charles did do a lot to push back against that tradition, and it would be a shame and a mistake if William and Catherine were not to continue in the same steps as King Charles.”

King Charles, who spent considerable time in Wales as the Prince of Wales, gave up the Llwynywermod estate after ascending to the throne. The estate, a three-bedroom former coach house, was purchased for him by The Duchy of Cornwall in 2007 for £1.2 million. Located near Llandovery, it served as a personal retreat where Charles often engaged with the local community and maintained a visible presence in the region.

Despite giving up the estate, Charles’s passion for Wales remains evident. Before becoming king, he was frequently seen walking in the area and actively participating in local activities alongside Queen Camilla. They were known as “active patrons” of the village, contributing to the community’s cultural and social life.

The commentary from Russell comes amidst growing expectations that William and Kate will take a more active role in Wales, similar to the precedent set by King Charles. “They’re giving every indicator that they do intend to be much more focused on Wales than maybe historical Princes and Princesses of Wales have been,” Russell added.

As the royal couple navigates their roles in the modern monarchy, their decisions regarding a Welsh residence and their involvement in Welsh life will likely be closely watched. The choice to embrace King Charles’s approach could symbolize a deeper commitment to their titles and the communities they represent.

By following King Charles’s example, Princess Kate and Prince William have the opportunity to strengthen their bond with Wales and demonstrate a genuine connection to the principality, enhancing the modern relevance of their roles in the British Royal Family.
