A staunch monarchist, Garry Toffoli, Executive Director of the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust, claims that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are perceived to have a closer relationship with Canada than the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Toffoli suggests that this affinity is rooted in Meghan Markle’s past and the couple’s decisions following their exit from royal duties. Meghan, who lived in Toronto for several years while filming the television series “Suits,” developed a deep connection with Canada. Additionally, when Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020, they initially relocated to Canada, reinforcing their bond with the country.

According to Toffoli, the Sussexes’ departure from royal duties and subsequent move to Canada were overwhelmingly supported by Canadians. He notes that there was significant public support for Prince Harry to even become Canada’s next Governor General. However, their plans to reside in Canada and take on semi-official royal roles were thwarted by the Royal Family during the Sandringham Summit, leading the couple to ultimately settle in the United States.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to maintain their connection with Canada, including plans to return to Vancouver for the Invictus Games in 2025. In contrast, Prince William and Princess Kate have not visited Canada since their 2016 tour, where they were invited by then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and brought along their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The ongoing favor towards Meghan and Harry in Canada highlights a significant shift in royal dynamics and popularity. Despite stepping back from their royal roles four years ago, the Sussexes continue to capture public interest and maintain strong ties with the Commonwealth country.
