Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is set to make his first public appearance following his summer holiday with Princess Kate and their three children. The exhibition is a collaborative effort between Homewards, the Saatchi Gallery, and the Eleven Eleven Foundation, and it aims to challenge stereotypes about homelessness through art and personal narratives.
During his visit, Prince William, 42, will engage with artists who have contributed their work to the exhibition, as well as individuals who have personal experience with homelessness. This event marks an important moment in the Homewards programme, which Prince William launched in June 2023 to address homelessness and support efforts to end it across the UK.
The exhibition is divided into three sections. The first section, titled “Invisible Words,” showcases a poignant collection of signs created by people experiencing homelessness worldwide. These signs convey a range of emotions, from shame and desperation to humour and resilience, providing a powerful commentary on the realities faced by those without stable housing.
The second section, “Reframed,” features works by various artists who explore themes related to homelessness. Notable contributors include Marc Quinn, Dave Tovey, Simone Brewster, Opake, and poet Surfing Sofas. These artists use their mediums to bring attention to the issue, offering new perspectives and raising awareness about the human experience behind homelessness.
Additionally, Prince William will have the opportunity to meet with the renowned photographer Rankin, who collaborated with Homewards to create a series of portraits featuring individuals with lived experience of homelessness. These photographs aim to humanize the issue, challenging viewers to see beyond stereotypes and recognize the dignity and strength of those affected.
The final section of the exhibition, “Open Doors,” showcases doors created by children from six Homewards locations: Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Lambeth, Newport, Northern Ireland, and Sheffield. These doors symbolize the pathways and possibilities that exist to help end homelessness. As part of this section, Prince William will meet children from Creative Kids, a charity in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole, who participated in one of the workshops to create these symbolic doors.
