Popcaan Shows Loyalty to Drake Amid Kendrick Lamar Song Controversy
Popcaan’s unwavering loyalty to Drake was on full display recently when a Kendrick Lamar song unexpectedly played during a conversation. The dancehall superstar, who has been signed to Drake’s OVO Sound since 2016, has a deep connection with the Toronto rapper, which he made clear during the incident.
While backstage at his Unruly Fest earlier this month, Popcaan was chatting with Link Up TV when a Kendrick Lamar track started playing in the background. Popcaan immediately stopped mid-conversation, visibly shocked by the song choice, and demanded a change in music. “I don’t care. I don’t wanna hear that. Change the station,” he said, displaying his loyalty to his OVO family.
This moment of allegiance isn’t new for Popcaan, who has consistently stood by Drake. After the release of Drake’s album VIEWS, dancehall veteran Mr. Vegas criticized Drake for not properly crediting the Jamaican artists featured on the album, including Beenie Man and Popcaan. Mr. Vegas argued that Drake was not giving due recognition, referencing “Controlla,” which sampled Beenie Man’s “Tear Off Mi Garment.” A leaked version of the track initially featured Popcaan, but his vocals were ultimately cut from the final release. Despite this, Popcaan’s influence still appeared on the album, as a sample from his song “Luh Yuh Bad” was used in “Too Good,” a collaboration between Drake and Rihanna.
In response to Mr. Vegas, Popcaan took to social media to declare his loyalty to OVO, dismissing Mr. Vegas’ criticism. “OVO Unruly, we don’t need your help. Don’t try to violate my brother now,” Popcaan said in a since-deleted post. “You don’t know anything about Unruly or OVO. You don’t need to defend Popcaan.”
Popcaan’s dedication to Drake and the OVO Sound label continues to set him apart as one of the most loyal artists in the industry. His willingness to defend his OVO family, even when faced with public controversy, reinforces the tight-knit bond that exists within the label. As Popcaan’s star continues to rise, his allegiance to Drake remains unwavering, proving that his ties to OVO run deeper than just business.
For Popcaan, it’s OVO and Unruly for life, and no song, not even from a hip-hop heavyweight like Kendrick Lamar, can change that.
