OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION🛑 Oscar Piastri hit by official sanction for illegal act following the accident with Lando Norris at the 2025 Canadian GP. H

Oscar Piastri has copied an official FIA warning for overtaking in safety car conditions after the checkered flag in the Canadian Grand Prix. The Australian driver was involved in a wild moment late in Sunday’s race when McLaren teammate Lando Norris ran up the back of him as he tried to pass.

Piastri was sitting in fourth place with Norris right behind him, with just four laps remaining. But disaster struck for McLaren when the British driver tried to sprint into a gap that wasn’t there. Norris clipped his teammate and then collided with the wall, ending his race as a safety car was deployed.

Norris immediately admitted guilt and said his actions were “stupid.” The Briton told team radio: “I’m sorry, it’s all bad. It’s all my fault. Unfortunately, sorry, stupid of me.”

Oscar Piastri Caught in the “Forbidden” Act After the Checkered Flag

While Piastri escaped all blame for the incident with his overzealous teammate, officials caught him breaking the rules after the checkered flag. The FIA — Formula 1’s governing body — found that Piastri was one of seven drivers to overtake another car while the safety procedure was still in place. The FIA issued official warnings to Piastri, Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll.

The driver overtook other cars after the chequered flag, but while safety car signals were still being displayed, following an accident on the start/finish straight involving car 4 (Lando Norris) and car 81 (Oscar Piastri), “the FIA said.”

“While the drivers were aware of where the accident was, they could not have known whether emergency equipment or marshals had been dispatched to the track, and so we must proceed with caution. We are therefore warning the driver concerned, along with all other competitors. Further violations may incur increased penalties.”

Norris copied a five-second penalty for causing the collision with Piastri, a punishment that was virtually useless considering he did not finish the race. Red Bull also launched a protest over the actions of race winner George Russell, believing he had deliberately controlled Max Verstappen during the safety period. But the FIA rejected the protest and Russell retained his victory.

Lando Norris issues public apology over Oscar Piastri crash

Piastri was talking to reporters after the race when Norris came up and apologized. Norris later said, “No one to blame but myself, I apologize to the whole team and also to Oscar for trying something probably a little too silly. I’m glad I didn’t ruin his race, I apologize to the team. Silly of me.”

Piastri ended up finishing fourth, ending an eight-race run of podiums dating back to the second race of the season. But Norris’ DNF saw Piastri extend his F1 Drivers’ Point lead from 10 points to 22 – a big boost for the Aussie as he chases the world championship.

Russell delivered a brilliant pole-flag drive to equer the win from Verstappen. Antonelli finished third – earning his first podium at the age of 18 – to round off a brilliant day for Mercedes.

Oscar Piastri reacts to Lando Norris’ collision

Piastri said after the race that he didn’t expect the incident with Norris to change the dynamic in the team garage, with McLaren letting their two drivers close each other down. “Obviously it’s not ideal for anyone, but I didn’t actually see the incident, so I don’t know what happened exactly,” the Aussie said.

“But if Lando took full responsibility, then that’s it, I guess. Just a bit of a tough race overall and not an ideal finish.”

When asked about his multi-lap battle with Norris, Piastri said he thought it was fair. “He made a pretty big move in Turn 10, held mine in the chicane, and it was definitely a tough battle but up until that point,” he said.

“Again, I didn’t see the incident, but I don’t think there was any bad intentions, I think it was really unfortunate. I’ll go and have a look obviously, but we’re both fighting for a world championship and are very grateful to the team that they’re allowing us to race. I don’t expect this to change anything in terms of that. We’ll continue to race throughout the year.”

Andrea Stella says McLaren will look into team-mates’ collision

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was quick to respond to Norris’s brain explosion. “We never want to see a McLaren involved in an accident and we certainly never want to see the two McLarens touching each other,” Stella told Sky Sports.

“It is something that we definitely need to review because this is a very clear principle. At the same time it is a contact that happened because of an error of judgment. Lando misjudged the distance from the car in front and therefore there was no bad intention.

“Lando is the immediate owner, he has taken responsibility for this, but it is certainly something to discuss and review. Our principles are already in place, our drivers will have something to learn further and we go racing again. It is absolutely an error of judgement that costs a lot in the championship. It is already costly for the team, so certainly an accident that should not have happened.”
