“Novak Djokovic Sounds Like A Politician”, “Perfect Response” – Fans Divided Over Serb’s Take On Jannik Sinner’s Doping Controversy

Novak Djokovic’s remarks on the doping controversy involving Jannik Sinner have divided fans. Addressing Sinner’s recent positive test for the banned substance clostebol, which was later cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), Djokovic highlighted the role of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) that he co-founded in 2019. The 24-time Grand Slam champion argued that Sinner’s swift resolution is not always the case for lower-ranked players facing similar situations.

Sinner, who recently parted ways with his physio and trainer due to their involvement in the accidental doping incident during the 2024 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, faced a provisional suspension that was quickly lifted after an appeal.

In a press conference, Djokovic emphasized that the PTPA was established to ensure fair and clear protocols for such cases. He criticized the disparity in legal representation for lower-ranked players, suggesting that their inability to afford top legal counsel may affect the outcomes of their cases.

“As far as Jannik’s case is concerned, this is precisely why we founded the PTPA—to advocate for standardized approaches and fair protocols in these situations,” Djokovic stated. “Many players, without naming any, have faced similar issues and didn’t receive the same outcome, often due to their financial limitations for legal representation.”

Djokovic’s comments drew mixed reactions from fans. Some criticized him for not fully understanding the ITIA’s doping regulations, with one fan expressing disappointment and suggesting Djokovic was uninformed. Another fan labeled his response as “word salad” and likened it to political rhetoric.

Conversely, others praised Djokovic for his insights. Supporters lauded his response as “perfect” and commended his intelligence and strategic thinking. One fan noted, “He is by far the smartest player on the court, with an exceptionally high IQ and EQ.”

Despite the controversy, Sinner’s provisional suspension was lifted quickly, and he lost 400 ranking points along with his prize money from the Indian Wells event. Had the ATP enforced a retroactive deduction of points, Djokovic might have briefly reclaimed the World No. 1 spot. However, the ATP decided against retroactively deducting Sinner’s points.

Djokovic is scheduled to begin his US Open title defense against Moldovan Radu Albot on August 26, while Sinner will start his campaign on August 27 against American Mackenzie McDonald.
