New York Rangers Top Prospect Brett Berard Stuns Many as He Opens Up About Recent Demotion to the AHL

Brett Berard recently wrapped up a 19-game stint in the NHL, fulfilling his childhood dream of skating on Madison Square Garden ice. During his time with the New York Rangers, he managed to notch his first NHL goal in a moment of pure elation, scoring against the very team he once cheered for. However, the journey to establishing himself as a mainstay in the Rangers’ lineup took a detour when he was reassigned to the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack. Rather than sulking over the demotion, Berard has embraced the challenge ahead, determined to prove himself once again.
Reflecting on his return to Hartford, Berard admitted that reality didn’t sink in until he found himself back in the AHL environment. “It didn’t even really hit me until I got back down here,” he said after Tuesday’s practice at XL Center. “It was kind of all real at that time.” Instead of lamenting his situation, he quickly adjusted, recognizing that this was just another step in his development.

When asked about his mindset following the reassignment, Berard remained optimistic and professional. “When they’re telling you you’re coming back here, it stinks in the moment,” he said. “But it’s an awesome organization. I’m still young, still trying to build upon my game, and I got thrown right back in (with Hartford). We played that Sunday. I got sent down Saturday, so there wasn’t too much time to dwell on that. You had to go back on the ice. Every game, every practice down here, they’re always watching, so you’ve got to play your best, no matter if the day before you got sent down or if you’re months into the season.”

Berard’s resilience and work ethic have not gone unnoticed by Hartford Wolfpack head coach Grant Potulny. Describing the young forward as a “pro’s pro,” Potulny praised Berard’s unwavering commitment and dedication to improving his game. “With Brett, you’re never concerned about effort or preparation or energy,” Potulny said. “It’s every shift, and that’s how he practices. It’s in the weight room. It’s just what he knows. He’s just one of those guys. That’s what he does every time, all the time.”
Prior to sustaining an injury on January 25th, Berard had found his stride, riding a three-game point streak and proving his offensive capabilities. Upon his return, he wasted no time making an impact, registering four points (one goal, three assists) in two games, including a standout performance in a win over Lehigh Valley. His offensive production has been consistent in the AHL, tallying 21 points in 25 games so far this season.
Berard’s scoring prowess is nothing new, as he led the Wolfpack in goals last season with 25. His ability to find the back of the net translated to the NHL as well, where he recorded his first career goal on January 2nd against the Boston Bruins, a team he idolized growing up. His second NHL goal came in front of family and friends against the Carolina Hurricanes, a moment he will cherish forever. While he has shown that he belongs at the highest level, the unfortunate reality is that there currently isn’t a roster spot for him in New York.
For now, Berard will continue to put in the work, knowing that his opportunity to return to the Rangers will come. His current AHL stats, which include 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists), demonstrate his readiness for another shot in the NHL. It may not be the path he envisioned, but his attitude and perseverance suggest that it’s only a matter of time before he earns his place back in the Blueshirts’ lineup.
