In a recent interview with YouTube channel La Esquina del KO, the former world champion urged boxing authorities to formally investigate Canelo Álvarez and his camp for potential use of banned substances.
But Márquez went further. He also criticized Álvarez for including rehydration clauses in his fight contracts—limits that restrict opponents from gaining more than a certain amount of weight after weigh-ins. “It’s not fair for fighters to step into the ring physically limited. That goes against the spirit of boxing,” he said, claiming such tactics disrespect the sport’s integrity.
Canelo Fires Back with Laughter and Receipts
Canelo Álvarez didn’t hold back. On his X account, the Mexican star reminded Márquez that he once doubted his ability to defeat elite opponents like Jermall Charlo, Billy Joe Saunders, Demetrius Andrade, and Daniel Jacobs. “Didn’t he say I couldn’t beat Charlo, Saunders, Andrade, or Jacobs?” he posted, adding laughing emojis and a not-so-subtle reminder of his victories over all four fighters, although he later deleted the post.
Rather than quieting the controversy, Álvarez‘s response has only fueled more debate. While many defend his track record, others argue that the accusations from Márquez deserve to be investigated to preserve transparency and fairness in the sport.
