But what can never be forgotten is that Hunter Hearst Helmsley was one of the most intense and vicious wrestlers of all time. As well as being a master technician in the ring, The Cerebral Assassin was also one of the sport’s best talkers. It was a talent that not only resulted in many legendary promos, but would also serve Jean-Paul Levesque well in his current role of Chief Content Officer.

**10. Triple H Forms A New D-Generation X**
“Now The Ball Is In MY court!”

D-Generation X was first formed on August 11, 1997. The original group consisted of Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chyna and Rick Rude. After losing the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 14, Shawn Michaels retired for four years due to a severe back injury.

Steve Austin taking the WWE Championship, Mike Tyson’s betrayal of D-X, and the end of Shawn Michaels’ in-ring career were surely devastating blows for the group. But from the ashes of defeat, Triple H (with Chyna) shocked the world by immediately assuming leadership of D-Generation X.

The night after WrestleMania 14 on Raw saw Hunter recruit the likes of X-Pac and The New Age Outlaws, then take the faction to new heights. And it all began with a great promo, and a memorable quote that showed Triple H’s supreme confidence in himself as a leader.

**9. Triple H Belittles Steve Austin Before No Mercy 1999**
“This Title Means More To Me Than It Will EVER Mean To You!”

Stone Cold Steve Austin lost the WWE Championship at SummerSlam 1999, with Triple H viciously injuring The Rattlesnake with a chair after the bout. Helmsley’s second reign as WWE Champion began at Unforgiven 1999, winning a six-pack challenge for the vacant title.

Austin served as the special-guest referee for that match, essentially awarding Triple H the title. On the October 11, 1999 episode of Raw, Austin locked Triple H in a room with a rattlesnake. The Game then arrived on the October 14, 1999 episode of SmackDown to reveal the vicious & grotesque snake bite on his face.

However, it was an elaborate set-up by the Cerebral Assassin who lulled Stone Cold into a false sense of security, beating up the Texas Rattlesnake, tearing the prosthetic off his face and mocking his foe. Triple H’s boast that the WWE Title meant more to him than Austin was bold and added more intensity for their showdown at No Mercy 1999.

**8. Triple H Belittles His One Time Mentor At Survivor Series 2005**
“Come on, Flair! Give Up, You Old B*****d!”

Triple H idolized Ric Flair growing up, and the two became close friends shortly after Ric Flair’s return to WWE in late 2001, and Helmsley’s return from injury in January 2002. After a heel turn in September 2002, Ric Flair would manage Triple H.

They would form the Evolution stable with Randy Orton and Batista in January 2003. For a long time, Triple H and Ric Flair seemed the perfect pair. Two of the greatest heels and wrestlers of all time united in ruthless friendship. But that all changed in October 2005, when Triple H brutally attacked his one-time mentor.

During their violent Last Man Standing match at Survivor Series 2005, Hunter took the microphone to further belittle The Nature Boy. The Game had used strong language to insult people before, but this vicious, ageist taunt against Ric Flair is perhaps his most infamous.

**7. Triple H As The WWE Champion**
“THIS Is The Most Important Thing In My Life.”

Triple H defeated Mankind to win his first of nine WWE Championships on the August 23, 1999 edition of Raw. After the 2002 Brand Split, Triple H would go on to win the World Heavyweight Championship on Raw five times. This makes him a 14-time world champion overall.

Triple H’s desire to become WWE Champion in 1999 overwhelmed him completely, to the point where he couldn’t simply be without the belt. Upon regaining the title for his third reign in 2000, The Game would constantly stress that the WWE Championship meant the world to him.

The sincerity behind his statement that the WWE Title was the most important thing in his life emphasized how prestigious Triple H viewed the belt. The fact that Hunter viewed the championship more valuable than his family and friends also demonstrated how selfish his character was.

**6. Triple H Forms One Of WWE’s Greatest Ever Factions**
“Evolution Has Just Passed You By.”

Triple H, Ric Flair, Batista and Randy Orton all joined together to brutally attack Scott Steiner on January 20, 2003. The group would officially call themselves Evolution on the February 3, 2003 episode of Raw. At Armageddon 2003, Evolution would hold the World Heavyweight, Intercontinental and Tag Team Championships in their possession.

Years after D-Generation X had seemingly faded away, Triple H formed another of WWE’s greatest factions. The concept of Ric Flair representing the past, Triple H the present, and Randy Orton & Dave Batista the future of wrestling was perfectly executed in Evolution.

An amazing success for all members involved, Evolution got off to a great start courtesy of Triple H’s promo. This iconic quote wasn’t just another delicious threat from The Game, it was an omen of glorious things to come.

**5. Triple H’s Response To Shawn Michaels’ SummerSlam Challenge**
“I Will Cripple Your A**! HBK – IS – DEAD!”

Triple H and Shawn Michaels became real-life friends when Hunter joined The Kliq upon signing with WWE in January 1995. When Shawn Michaels returned to WWE in 2002, he reunited with Triple H with the intent of reviving D-Generation X.

Hunter betrayed Shawn by brutally attacking him twice, which led to The Heartbreak Kid coming out of retirement to wrestle again. For a long time, it seemed like Shawn Michaels would never wrestle again. But on the August 5, 2002 episode of Raw, the Heartbreak Kid vowed to recover from his injuries in time for SummerSlam 2002.

Helmsley launched a scathing tirade at Michaels, saying he couldn’t wrestle anymore, and that he’d regret challenging him. Hunter’s exact words emphasized how utterly ruthless and depraved The Cerebral Assassin truly was.

**4. Triple H’s Shoot Interview With Jim Ross**
“I Am The F’n Game, JR!”

Triple H betrayed D-Generation X at WrestleMania 15 to join The Corporation. Triple H’s shoot interview with Jim Ross was broadcast on the July 25, 199 episode of Sunday Night Heat. After Triple H’s shocking heel turn in March 1999, he was determined to take the main-event spot he believed was rightfully his. And a sit-down interview with Jim Ross was a pivotal step in Triple H’s path towards greatness.

Similar to what Stone Cold’s “Austin 3:16” speech did for The Rattlesnake, Triple H’s declaration of “I AM the f*****g Game!” to Jim Ross elevated the Cerebral Assassin to the next level. It’s an iconic quote that demonstrated the absolute belief that no one could touch Triple H, and that it was his time to take the WWE Championship.

**3. In The Prime Of His Career**
“I – Am – The – Game! And I Am THAT-DAMN-GOOD!”

In late 1999, Triple H married Stephanie McMahon, who betrayed her father to take over WWE with her new husband. With Triple H and Stephanie now in power, the McMahon-Helmsley Era was born. Triple H defeated The Big Show to win his third WWE Championship on the January 3, 2000 episode of Raw.

With the likes of Steve Austin, The Rock and The Undertaker having long cemented their main-event spots with catchphrases, The Game needed one of his own to connect with the crowd. One that allowed fans to take him seriously as an individual player and not just part of D-Generation X.

This was perhaps Triple H’s boldest self-proclamation. But Helmsley could more than walk his talk, especially in the year 2000, which fans and critics alike regarded it as the Year Of The Game.

**2. D-X Parodying Michael Buffer**
“Ooooooohhhhh… Let’s Get Ready To Suuuuuccckkk Iiiiittttt!”

Michael Buffer began his career as a ring announcer in 1982, developing his iconic catchphrase in 1984. In 1992, Buffer obtained a federal trademark for the catchphrase “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!” Michael Buffer was the exclusive ring-announcer for WCW during the Monday Night Wars.

During the Monday Night Wars, one of WCW’s biggest guns was truly the legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer, who beautifully hyped up matches on Nitro and on pay-per-view.
