Red Bull Crisis: No More Upgrades for Verstappen in 2025

In a shocking announcement just minutes ago, Red Bull Racing confirmed that Max Verstappen’s RB21 will receive no further major upgrades for the remainder of the 2025 Formula 1 season. This bombshell, revealed by Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, has sent shockwaves through the paddock, leaving Verstappen’s championship hopes hanging by a thread and plunging the team into a deepening crisis. With McLaren dominating and Verstappen trailing championship leader Oscar Piastri by 49 points after nine races, this decision could mark the end of Red Bull’s title aspirations.

The decision to halt major upgrades stems from Red Bull’s struggles with the RB21’s inconsistent performance and narrow operating window, as Marko admitted to RacingNews365. While minor tweaks are planned, the team is reportedly shifting focus to their 2026 project, a move that has sparked outrage among fans and analysts. Verstappen, who has been battling McLaren’s superior MCL39 with a sub-par car, now faces an uphill battle to secure a fifth consecutive Drivers’ Championship. Posts on X reflect growing frustration, with fans labeling the team’s strategy as a surrender to McLaren’s dominance.

Verstappen’s recent performance at the Spanish Grand Prix epitomized Red Bull’s woes. A controversial collision with George Russell resulted in a 10-second penalty, three penalty points, and a demotion to P10th, costing valuable points. The team’s decision to fit hard tires during a late safety car period, coupled with a premature order to yield a position to Russell, further hampered Verstappen’s race. These missteps, combined with the lack of upgrades, have left Red Bull languishing in fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, 218 points behind McLaren.

The timing of this announcement couldn’t be worse. Verstappen is one penalty point away from a race ban, prompting the FIA to discuss a super license exemption for Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad as a potential replacement. Speculation about Verstappen’s future is rife, with some, including his former mechanic Calum Nicholas, predicting he may retire after 2025 if he secures the title. Others suggest a move to Mercedes, where Toto Wolff has expressed interest, especially as George Russell’s contract remains unsigned beyond 2025.

Red Bull’s decision has drawn sharp criticism. Team principal Christian Horner has called for clearer FIA guidance on stewarding decisions, while Verstappen himself has voiced frustration with F1’s racing guidelines. The team’s inability to provide a competitive car has fueled rumors of internal turmoil, with fans on X pointing to the departure of key figures like Adrian Newey as a sign of deeper issues.

As the 2025 season progresses, Red Bull faces a pivotal moment. Without upgrades, Verstappen’s championship hopes rest on his driving brilliance alone. Whether he can overcome these challenges or if this marks the end of Red Bull’s dominance remains to be seen. For now, the Milton Keynes squad is in crisis mode, and the F1 world is watching closely.
