Mike wants Usyk to retire and there is no rematch in October

Initially touted for an October rematch, Tony Bellew believes there is no chance we’ll see Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury run it back that quickly.

Usyk made history by defeating Fury, scoring a knockdown on the way to a split decision victory, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in nearly 25 years. Both fighters had a rematch clause in their contract, and given the thrilling nature of their first encounter, fans are eagerly anticipating a second bout.

Tyson Fury didn’t take long to announce his decision to pursue the rematch, with his promoter Frank Warren confirming that the Brit is determined to avenge his loss, targeting October for the fight.

“The rematch will be in October, Tyson confirmed that yesterday. I told him to really think about it before he did it, but he wants it and he wants it badly,” Warren stated.

However, speaking on his ‘Club Bellew’ podcast with Eddie Hearn, Tony Bellew expressed strong doubts about the feasibility of an October rematch. “Usyk has been in camp for eight months. No [Fury and Usyk won’t be ready for October]. I know it, I know it – they will not be ready for October, neither of them,” Bellew said.

Bellew, who has a deep understanding of the sport, suggested that the physical and mental toll of their first fight, combined with the extensive preparation Usyk has already undergone, makes an October rematch highly unlikely. Instead, Bellew expressed a desire to see Usyk retire, believing the Ukrainian has achieved everything possible in the sport.

“I hope Usyk retires. He’s financially secure and has never been in it for the money. He’s the best heavyweight in the world and has completed the game,” Bellew remarked.

Bellew’s prediction appears to be supported by recent comments from Fury’s US promoter, Bob Arum, who suggested that the rematch is more likely to occur in November or December.

As fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Usyk vs. Fury saga, it seems they may need to be patient a little longer, with a late-year showdown now looking more likely.
