Jake Paul is set to face off against boxing legend Mike Tyson in a highly controversial match on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Concerns have been raised about Tyson’s health as he prepares to fight an opponent 31 years his junior. Tyson, who will turn 58 at the time of the bout, faces the 27-year-old Paul, who is in his athletic prime.
Jeff Fenech, who trained Tyson during the latter part of his illustrious career, believes Tyson’s power will be too much for Paul. Fenech told Wide World of Sports, “I have no doubt [Tyson will win] if Mike is comfortable and doesn’t try to punch all at once. If he makes Jake Paul miss, Mike will knock him out in a few rounds. One hundred percent.”
Fenech added, “I’ve talked to Mike and told him what I think. Hopefully, he’ll listen to me. If he does, I have no doubt he will knock Paul out. He won’t have any problems.”
Initially, it was thought that the Paul vs. Tyson fight would be an exhibition match. However, last month, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation confirmed it as a professional bout under revised rules. The clash will be an eight-round fight, with each round lasting two minutes instead of the usual three for professional matches. Both fighters will wear 14-ounce gloves, heavier than the typical 10-ounce gloves, and will not wear headgear. Knockouts will be allowed, and the results will count towards their professional records.
Paul will move up to heavyweight for the first time in his career to face Tyson, having previously fought in the cruiserweight division. The YouTube star has bulked up to 230 pounds and feels comfortable at this weight.
“I’m a natural heavyweight. This is what I was born to do: compete in this weight class,” Paul said at a press conference earlier this month. “I’ll show Mike who has more power because he’s underestimating me. I think everyone else is underestimating me, and I believe I hit harder.”
Paul acknowledged the challenges ahead but remains undeterred. “I know it will be tough. I know I will have to fight through adversity. I know I might even go to the canvas. I’m scared, don’t get me wrong, but fear doesn’t hold me back. It’s about stepping into it despite being scared. That’s real bravery.”
The boxing world eagerly awaits this unique and controversial match-up, with high expectations and intense speculation surrounding the outcome.
