The heavyweight matchup between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul set for July 20 in Arlington, Texas, has been postponed, the fight’s promoter has announced.
In a statement released Friday, Most Valuable Promotions said that medical professionals have recommended that Tyson, the 57-year-old former heavyweight champion, should be restricted to “minimal light training over the next weeks” before returning to a full training regimen.
On Sunday, Tyson reported feeling nauseous and dizzy on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, and was treated by paramedics who boarded the plane upon its landing.
Tyson’s condition was attributed to an ulcer flare-up, which led to the physician-recommended limitations put on his activities in the short term.
“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will be back to my full training schedule soon,” Tyson said in the statement.
“I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
MVP, founded by Paul, did not immediately provide a new date for the postponed card, but the promoter set a date of June 7 as the deadline for an announcement.
“Both Mike and Jake are in agreement that it is only fair to ensure that both athletes have equal training time to prepare for this important match and are able to compete at the highest level,” the statement read. “The health and well-being of athletes is our top priority, and we fully support Mike in taking the necessary time to allow him to perform at the level he expects of himself.”
Purchased tickets will be honored for the new fight date, MVP stated, and no action is necessary to secure those tickets or arranged seat locations. Refunds will be offered at the original point of purchase for ticket purchasers unable to attend on the new date.
