Floyd Mayweather’s victory over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2013 was marked by controversy, drawing attention from none other than Mike Tyson.
In a highly anticipated bout, the young Mexican star Canelo faced off against America’s pound-for-pound king, Mayweather. At just 23, Canelo was outclassed by the more experienced Mayweather, who was 36 at the time. Mayweather dominated the fight, earning a convincing points decision according to two of the three judges.
Dave Moretti scored the fight 116-112, and Craig Metcalfe had it 117-111, both in favor of Mayweather. However, judge CJ Ross sparked outrage by scoring the contest a draw at 114-114.
Despite Mayweather’s victory by majority decision, Ross’s scorecard drew significant backlash. This wasn’t her first controversial decision; she previously faced criticism for her score in Manny Pacquiao’s split decision loss to Tim Bradley a year earlier.
Former undisputed heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson did not hold back in his assessment. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Tyson suggested that deeper issues might be at play. “When you’re that great and you make somebody who is a great fighter seem like a journeyman, you’re going to build animosity,” Tyson remarked. “There had to have been some animosity there. It was pretty much a shutout. For her to do that – maybe her license should be revoked. I don’t want her, by any chance, to referee any of my fights.”
Following the backlash, Ross stepped down as a boxing judge, retiring amidst the controversy and never scoring another bout again.
Mayweather retired with an undefeated record in 2017, having won 15 major world championship titles across multiple weight classes. He now participates in exhibition matches against various opponents, including MMA fighters, YouTubers, reality TV stars, and former sparring partners.
There are rumors of a potential rematch with old rival Manny Pacquiao, with whom he fought in 2015 in what remains the highest-grossing boxing pay-per-view of all time.
