Mike Tyson has admitted he feared he would have to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life as he prepares to face Jake Paul later this year.
The 57-year-old boxing legend looks in outstanding shape ahead of the bout, with fans blown away by his punching power. However, Tyson has faced significant health challenges, including a serious back issue. In 2022, Tyson was seen in a wheelchair, later revealing that he suffers from sciatica, a condition that affects the lower back.
Speaking in a video uploaded to his Instagram story, Tyson shared his struggles and how he overcame them. “Listen, it’s a miracle. I didn’t know what was going to happen in my life,” he said. “I was scared I was going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Your back hurts, there’s nothing I can do. I’m useless.”
Despite these fears, Tyson is determined to return to the ring. His last fight was an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, which ended in a draw. The upcoming fight against 27-year-old Jake Paul, who is 30 years his junior, has sparked controversy and concern among fans and fellow boxers. Deontay Wilder has even expressed fears that Tyson could end up in a coma due to the physical risks involved.
Yet, Tyson remains undeterred. Speaking last month, he addressed his critics, stating, “I’m 58, and what? I’m getting billions of views from just talking about fighting. Everybody, even most of the athletes, they’re jealous… Who at 58 can sell out an 80,000-seat arena?”
Tyson also emphasized that despite his friendship with Paul, their bout will be a serious competition. “We’re friends. There’s no doubt we’re friends. But in the ring, we’re not going to be friends. That’s just what it is,” he said.
As the fight date approaches, Tyson continues to train rigorously, impressing fans with his dedication and resilience. The boxing world is eagerly awaiting this unique and highly anticipated showdown.
