Michael Chandler Gives Update on Conor McGregor Fight and Names Another UFC Legend in Q&A

Michael Chandler remains laser-focused on his long-awaited clash with Conor McGregor, even as his UFC journey takes unexpected turns. The lightweight contender, who was initially slated to fight McGregor in 2023, still sees the Irish superstar as a key figure in his future—alongside another potential opponent, Jorge Masvidal.

The McGregor Saga

Chandler and McGregor were first paired to fight following their stint as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter in early 2023. The bout was anticipated to headline UFC 303 in June 2024. However, McGregor’s withdrawal due to a training injury—a broken pinky toe—sidelined him for the remainder of the year, leaving Chandler waiting for his moment in the spotlight.

Frustrated by the delay, Chandler took on former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 309 in November. Despite a valiant effort, Chandler suffered a unanimous decision loss.

Chandler Eyes Two Big Fights in 2025

Following his defeat, Chandler engaged with fans on social media, addressing questions about his future. When asked if he would wait for McGregor or take another fight early in 2025, Chandler replied with confidence:

“Conor in 2025.”

Chandler remains optimistic about the McGregor matchup, which he believes could still materialize in the new year. However, he is not limiting his sights to just one opponent.

In an intriguing twist, Chandler also called out Jorge Masvidal, the veteran fighter known for his brash personality and electrifying bouts. Masvidal, who retired from MMA in 2023 following four straight losses, has since ventured into boxing but recently announced plans for an MMA comeback in April 2025.

During his fan Q&A, Chandler addressed Masvidal directly:

“Where you at Jorge?”

The possibility of Chandler versus Masvidal adds another layer of excitement to 2025, as both fighters are known for their explosive styles and charisma.

Reflections on Oliveira Loss

Chandler also took the opportunity to clarify his controversial comments about Charles Oliveira. After his loss at UFC 309, Chandler claimed he would beat Oliveira “nine times out of 10,” despite having lost to the Brazilian twice—including their first meeting at UFC 262 in 2021, where Oliveira captured lightweight gold.

Chandler faced online ridicule for his bold assertion but later explained:

“Clarification … nine out of the next 10 times.”

Despite his confidence, a trilogy fight with Oliveira seems unlikely in the immediate future, as both fighters pursue different paths in the division.

2025: A Defining Year for Chandler

At 38, Chandler recognizes the urgency of making the most of his remaining years in the sport. With McGregor and Masvidal both representing blockbuster matchups, Chandler’s ambitions for 2025 could define his legacy in the UFC.

While the McGregor fight offers a chance for redemption and career-defining notoriety, a showdown with Masvidal could deliver a fan-friendly spectacle between two of the promotion’s most exciting personalities.

As the new year approaches, Chandler’s determination remains unshaken. Whether he’s trading blows with “The Notorious” or “Gamebred,” one thing is clear: Michael Chandler plans to leave it all in the Octagon in 2025.
