Mbappe’s Unsporting Behavior Toward France’s “Hero”

In a tense and emotional match during the Euro 2024 round of 16, Kylian Mbappe’s behavior drew widespread criticism. The French forward celebrated in front of Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen after an unfortunate own goal, causing an uproar among fans and commentators alike.

The incident occurred in the 85th minute of the match when Jan Vertonghen deflected Randal Kolo Muani’s shot into his own net, giving France a crucial lead. While Muani’s teammates celebrated the goal, Mbappe turned towards Vertonghen and raised his arms in celebration directly in front of the 37-year-old defender. Vertonghen, however, did not see Mbappe’s gesture as he had already turned away.

Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg noticed Mbappe’s provocative behavior and immediately cautioned the 26-year-old forward, though he refrained from issuing a yellow card. Despite the official’s intervention, Mbappe faced harsh criticism on social media for his lack of sportsmanship.

The incident did not go unnoticed by fans online. One user, @FiorentinaTuna, commented, “Mbappe has no class,” while another, @itz_Olajerry, remarked, “That was completely unnecessary.” @PhilipDawson1 added, “Truly unprofessional and shameful, especially for a captain.” The widespread disapproval highlighted the general consensus that Mbappe’s actions were inappropriate and unbecoming of a leader.

The animosity between Mbappe and Vertonghen had been building throughout the match. In the 71st minute, the two players clashed in the Belgian penalty area, exchanging heated words and nearly coming to blows before being separated by the referee. Shortly after, Vertonghen received a yellow card for a foul on Muani.

Euro 2024 marks Mbappe’s first major tournament as captain of the French national team, following Hugo Lloris’s retirement after the 2022 World Cup. However, the Real Madrid forward has struggled to make a significant impact, scoring just once from the penalty spot in the tournament. In the match against Belgium, Mbappe took five shots, all of which missed the target.

Vertonghen, who has been a stalwart for Belgium since 2007 with 10 goals in 156 appearances, was visibly disheartened by the own goal. Despite the unfortunate moment, the veteran defender maintained his professionalism and sportsmanship, shaking hands with Mbappe after the match, even as Belgium was eliminated and France advanced to the quarter-finals.

Mbappe’s unsportsmanlike celebration has cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of triumph for France. His actions have sparked a debate about the responsibilities and conduct expected of a captain, especially in high-stakes matches. As France prepares for their quarter-final clash, Mbappe will need to demonstrate the leadership and maturity befitting his role, both on and off the field.
