Max Verstappen has made a BIG STATEMENT to George Russell, who publicly criticized him during the Canadian GP two weeks ago.

Two weeks after a controversial collision at the Spanish Grand Prix and subsequent public criticism from George Russell at the Canadian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has issued a fiery statement about his Mercedes rival. The ongoing feud, which has captivated the Formula 1 community, escalated during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend on June 13-15, 2025, when Russell accused Verstappen of dangerous driving and suggested a race ban would be warranted. Verstappen, now just a single penalty point away from a suspension, responded with a bold social media post that redefined debates over his aggressive racing style and the sport’s regulations.

The saga began at the Spanish Grand Prix on June 1, 2025, where Verstappen and Russell collided late in the race. Following a safety car restart, Verstappen, on hard tires, struggled to maintain position against Russell and Charles Leclerc. After contact at Turn 1, where Verstappen used the Escape Road to maintain his position, Red Bull instructed him to give the position to Russell to avoid a penalty. However, Verstappen appeared to slow down at Turn 5, only to accelerate and hit Russell’s Mercedes, a move that many, including Russell, considered deliberate. The stewards handed Verstappen a 10-second penalty and three penalty points, bringing his total of 12 months to 11 – one shy of an automatic race ban. Russell, speaking to Sky Sports F1, called the move “totally unnecessary” and unprecedented in F1, comparing it to sim racing antics and questioning Verstappen’s example for young drivers.

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Russell upped the ante, stating that a race ban for Verstappen would be fair if he accrued another penalty point, and stressing that the rules apply equally to all drivers. He also suggested that Verstappen’s actions in Spain were an attempt to “scare” him, although he claimed there were no personal issues, citing a cordial airport meeting where Verstappen was with his newborn. Verstappen, however, was not amused. During the post-qualifying press conference in Montreal, where Russell secured pole position ahead of Verstappen by 0.160 seconds, the Red Bull driver lashed out, calling the continued criticism “childish” and “annoying”. He expressed frustration over Russell’s comments, stating: “I don’t need to hear it again. It really makes me angry.”

Verstappen’s final statement, posted to Instagram on June 14, 2025, doubled down on his stance. Without directly naming Russell, he wrote: “I race hard but fair. Some talk too much to cover up their own mistakes. Focus on your driving, not my character. Montreal will show who’s here to race.” The post, which generated thousands of comments on X, was widely interpreted as a direct jab at Russell. Fans on the platform were divided, with some praising Verstappen’s unapologetic stance and others taking Russell’s call for accountability as a pointer, pointing to messages such as: “Max needs to chill out before watching from the sidelines” and “Russell’s just stating facts – his rules.”

The controversy has shone a spotlight on Verstappen’s aggressive driving style, which has been both celebrated and criticised throughout his career. Former champion Nico Rosberg, commentating on Sky Sports, called the Spanish incident “unacceptable” and suggested a disqualification was warranted, while Red Bull’s Christian Horner confirmed that Verstappen apologised to the team after the race. Despite this, Verstappen’s statement suggests he remains defiant and unwilling to change his approach. He told reporters in Montreal: “It doesn’t change my approach. Missing a race is not ideal but it’s not the end of the world.”

As the Canadian Grand Prix unfolds on June 15, 2025, all eyes will be on the front-row showdown between Verstappen and Russell. With championship leader Oscar Piastri trailing Verstappen on 49 points, the pressure is on to avoid further penalties while maintaining his competitive advantage. Russell, meanwhile, is looking to capitalise on Mercedes’ recent pace, as evidenced by his pole position. The incident has also sparked wider debate over F1’s consistency, with Red Bull’s Horner calling for clearer guidelines.

This rivalry, fuelled by on-track clashes and off-track barbs, promises to add drama to an already intense season. Verstappen’s statement underlines his determination to let his racing do the talking, but with the threat of a ban looming, the Dutchman must carefully avoid a costly misstep in Montreal.
