Manchester City Fined Over £2 Million by Premier League for Repeated Rule Violations.
Manchester City has been fined more than £2 million by the Premier League for breaching rules related to match start times and resuming play after halftime 22 times over the past two seasons. This penalty comes after City acknowledged their violations and agreed to the substantial fine.
The Premier League’s investigation found that Manchester City committed 22 violations, with 8 occurring in the 2022/23 season and 14 in the previous season. The club has publicly apologized for these infractions and has assured the league that measures have been taken to prevent future occurrences.
Manchester City confirmed that they have reminded both players and management staff about their responsibilities to adhere to the rules, ensuring that such violations do not happen again.
A statement from the Premier League read: “The Premier League and Manchester City FC have agreed on sanctions after the club admitted to breaching Premier League Rule L.33 concerning match start times and resuming play after halftime.”
“These violations occurred during several Premier League matches in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. The rules are in place to maintain the highest professional standards in organizing the league and to provide certainty for fans and participating clubs.”
The statement further emphasized the importance of these rules for the global broadcast schedule: “These rules also ensure that all 380 matches of the League are broadcasted on schedule worldwide.”
The agreement on sanctions was approved by three members of the independent Judicial Panel as required by Premier League rules. The fine was calculated on a sliding scale for each violation, with delays totaling 39 minutes and 52 seconds across the 22 matches.
The first warning was issued after a delay of 1 minute and 18 seconds during the second half kickoff against Crystal Palace in August 2022. Subsequent fines ranged from £10,000 to £200,000 per infraction, with the longest delay being 2 minutes and 46 seconds in the final match of last season against West Ham.
It is important to note that this penalty is separate from the 115 financial regulation breaches that Manchester City is currently facing. The club continues to cooperate with ongoing investigations related to financial misconduct.
Manchester City is determined to move forward and maintain compliance with Premier League regulations, ensuring that such breaches do not occur in the future.
