”LATEST NEWS” Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ inspires a video game that attracts 1.2 million players within the first 36 hours.
Kendrick Lamar has turned his track “Not Like Us” into a unique video game. The song, referred to by some as a diss track and by others as a West Coast anthem, debuted on May 4, 2024, and quickly reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the United States, the song amassed 70.9 million official streams, 5 million radio plays, and sold 15,000 copies by May 9.
Two months later, Lamar released the long-awaited music video, which rapidly gained 69.9 million views. Now, the hit song has entered the gaming world with “Not Like Us: The Game.” According to Rolling Stone, the game allows players to take on the role of Kendrick Lamar and use a baseball bat to hit an owl-shaped piñata until candy spills out. Each time the player hits the piñata, they hear the word “wop.”
The game concept was developed by Richie Branson, whose real name is Marcus Brown II. “I do this for the people,” Branson shared with Rolling Stone. “This is my love letter to hip-hop, and I want to ensure everyone enjoys it. This game, with Kendrick smashing owls around, I think it’s the most fun way to express my love for hip-hop.”
Branson, who has worked for Def Jam and Adult Swim, also produced a chiptune version of the song in just a few hours. “I didn’t want to use the actual music,” he explained. “As a musician, I understand you can’t copy someone’s song. Since I’m a music producer, I recreated the beat. By the eleventh hour, I felt the formula was there. The beat is the icing on an already great ice cream.”
The game has seen tremendous success, attracting 1.2 million plays within the first 36 hours, Branson revealed on X, formerly known as Twitter.
