Jos Verstappen has voiced support for young driver Liam Lawson to take over Sergio Perez’s seat at Red Bull Racing next season, even as his son, Max Verstappen, expresses a preference to retain his current teammate. Max, currently on the brink of his fourth consecutive Formula 1 title after a win at the Brazilian Grand Prix, has made it clear he values stability within the team.
While Max’s recent victory in Brazil put him within reach of another Drivers’ Championship, Perez’s struggles continue to affect Red Bull’s standing in the Constructors’ Championship. Perez, 34, managed only an 11th-place finish in Sao Paolo, a slight improvement over his 17th-place result in Mexico City, but the performances have done little to aid Red Bull’s position against rivals McLaren and Ferrari.
Despite extending his contract with Red Bull in June, Perez’s recent results have fueled speculation about his future with the team. In an interview with Viaplay, Jos Verstappen, 52, suggested it may be time for Red Bull to consider Lawson as a viable alternative. “I think Lawson is doing very well,” he said. “It seems logical to me that he is ready to step up. Let him finish this season and build confidence, and then the team has to decide what they do for next year.”
Jos added that a competitive teammate could push his son even further. “I certainly don’t oppose that [Lawson replacing Perez],” he stated. “It’s better if there is someone who is competitive and pushes Max forward a bit. That always helps, but we’ll see.”
However, Max Verstappen has been vocal about his desire for Perez to remain with the team. Speaking to Fox Sports in September, Max emphasized the importance of continuity and his good relationship with Perez. “I want, of course, Checo to be my teammate. He’s a great guy, we get on really well, plus he’s a great racer,” Max said, highlighting his preference for stability at Red Bull.
As Red Bull weighs its options for the 2025 season, the team faces a decision that could impact both team dynamics and future championship races.
