Jon Jones Breaks Down Islam Makhachev’s FIGHTING Style and Next Opponent!!!
In a rare and insightful breakdown, UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones has shared his thoughts on the fighting style of reigning Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev—and who he believes the Dagestani phenom should face next.
Appearing on a recent MMA podcast, Jones didn’t hold back in his analysis.
“Islam is the most complete fighter at 155,” Jones said. “He’s Khabib 2.0, but more refined. His control, his timing, and his calm under pressure—it’s surgical. The way he neutralizes guys is elite-level martial arts.”
Jones, widely considered one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, praised Makhachev’s grappling-heavy approach, but pointed out what truly separates him from the pack.
“It’s not just the wrestling. It’s his transitions. His ability to mix in strikes just enough to create openings. He doesn’t waste energy. He drowns guys without getting tired himself.”
When asked who he thinks Makhachev should fight next, Jones didn’t hesitate:
“If I’m the UFC, I book Islam vs. Leon Edwards at welterweight. That’s the real test. If he wants double champ status, it’s time to move up and face a strong striker with excellent takedown defense. That’s a legacy fight.”
While Makhachev has already expressed interest in challenging for the welterweight title, Jon Jones believes the timing is now—before the division gets logjammed or someone else steals the spotlight.
“Islam is on the cusp of greatness,” Jones said. “He has the skills, the team, and the discipline. Now he needs the big-name fights to cement his legacy.”
Jones also addressed fans who say Makhachev is “boring”:
“People used to say that about GSP too. Dominance isn’t always flashy—but it’s greatness. And Islam has that.”
