JJ Spaun responds to crowd criticism after glancing at Rory McIlroy’s club

JJ Spaun lost to Rory McIlroy in the 2025 Players Championship playoff, especially when he hit the ball into the water on hole 17.

It will be a long time before golf fans forget the sight of JJ Spaun hitting his ball over the lake on the 17th hole in a playoff at the Players Championship on Monday. And it will be even longer before JJ Spaun himself forgets the moment.

For a few endless seconds, as Spaun’s ball arced toward the flagstick, it looked like he had just hit the best shot of the tournament. But it didn’t stop. It kept flying, and it ended up in the water behind the green without ever touching the ground.

Many fans and pundits questioned Spaun’s club choice, an 8-iron, after the disaster, which nearly handed the win to Rory McIlroy. Video emerged showing Spaun glancing at McIlroy’s club choice before his shot, leading many to speculate that he opted for the longer club after seeing Rory hit the 9-iron into the wind.

However, on Wednesday’s episode of Foreplay Pod, Spaun hit back at the criticism, simply explaining, “you guys don’t know anything.” Hear JJ say:

“I warmed up and practiced those shots and I hit an 8-iron that went 128 yards, into the wind, it flew perfect, and it was 130 yards,” Spaun told Riggs. “When we got to the hole, I knew what I was going to hit. I didn’t care what club Rory was hitting, but I looked, just to gauge what kind of shot I was going to hit with that club to figure out the right distance.

“I mean, Rory’s two strokes longer than me. He’s one of the longest hitters on tour. Everybody knows that. And people [mockingly], ‘Oh, you hit a 9-iron and that guy hits an 8-iron, that’s stupid.’ Like, you guys don’t know anything. I’m happy with the swing I made. I made it the way I wanted to. You know, I’m down a stroke, I have to hit a good shot.”JJ Spaun responds to crowd criticism after glancing at Rory McIlroy's club

There’s a lot to parse here, but the only person Spaun has to answer to is himself. He knows what really happened better than anyone, and if he’s happy with his decision-making and execution, that’s all that matters. He also deserves credit for not hiding from the media after that heartbreaking loss. Think what you will about his club choice, but it’s something that the likes of McIlroy and Collin Morikawa, both of whom have disappeared from interviews after high-profile mistakes in the past year, can’t do.”
