Jets Set to Interview Coach Who Has Controversial History With Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets are casting a wide net in their search for a new head coach, interviewing a group that includes the team’s former coach and another who has a controversial history with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The team announced on Jan. 8 that they are bringing in Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for an interview. Prior to his two Super Bowl seasons leading Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense, Nagy had a four-year stint as head coach of the Chicago Bears where he was named AP Coach of the Year in 2018.

Nagy also had some noted run-ins with Rodgers, the embattled Jets quarterback. After Rodgers led the Green Bay Packers to a win over Nagy’s Bears in October 2021, he shouted a taunt at the team.

“I own you, all my [expletive] life,” Rodgers yelled toward Nagy and the Bears during the win. “I still own you, I still own you.”

When the teams met again in December that season, Rodgers said he didn’t regret taunting the Bears.

“I don’t know if you can question a whole lot of what I said,” Rodgers said. “We’ve had a good record over the years against them and won a lot of games.

“At some point, it will be used against me. It is what it is. I don’t regret saying it at all.”

The Jets have interviewed several candidates including the team’s former head coach, Rex Ryan. Mike Vrabel and Ron Rivera have also completed interviews after the conclusion of the season.

Rodgers faces an uncertain future with the Jets, with some suggesting the team could move on this offseason and the All-Pro quarterback saying he will take time to think about his future.
