In the realm of NFL coaching moves, it appears that the New York Jets are steering clear of Detroit Lions’ Offensive Coordinator, Ben Johnson. Reports suggest that Johnson, at 38, isn’t exactly pining for the Jets’ position, and the Jets aren’t expected to formally reach out to him for an interview either. This mutual lack of interest might just suggest that both parties see better fits elsewhere.
Johnson’s coaching journey has been a steady climb since he began as a graduate assistant with Boston College back in 2009. He transitioned to coaching tight ends in 2011, showcasing an early knack for player development.
The Miami Dolphins recognized his potential in 2012, bringing him on board as an offensive assistant. By 2013, he was refining quarterback mechanics as an assistant quarterbacks coach.
Versatility became his trademark, with roles coaching tight ends and wide receivers for the Dolphins stretching to 2019.
The Detroit Lions saw an opportunity when they hired Johnson as a quality control coach in 2019. By 2020, he had taken charge of the tight ends before earning his stripes as the offensive coordinator in 2022.
Under Johnson’s watchful eye, the Lions’ offense reached unprecedented heights in 2024, ranking first in both yards and points per game. They also boasted the second-best passing attack and a robust sixth-place ranking in rushing yards—stats that not only echo efficiency but also formidable firepower.
In essence, Johnson has meticulously cultivated a potent offensive machine, which likely explains why both he and the Jets might feel there’s no pressing need for their paths to cross at this particular juncture.
