Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon provided an update on driver Alex Bowman after a severe crash during the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Bowman, driving the #48 Chevrolet, was involved in a multi-car incident on lap 67 that resulted in a head-on collision with the outside wall, ending his race prematurely. Despite the heavy impact, Bowman was able to exit the car under his own power and was checked at the infield care center.

Gordon reported that Bowman was very sore following the crash but confirmed that there was no reason to believe he would not compete in the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race in Mexico City. This event, the Viva Mexico 250, marks the first non-exhibition Cup Series race outside the United States since 1958 and will take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on a 100-lap road course.
Bowman described the Michigan crash as possibly the biggest hit of his career, with his car hitting the SAFER barrier at approximately 150 mph, causing significant damage and lifting the rear tires off the ground. Despite his history of injuries, including a concussion in 2022 and a back injury in 2023, Bowman has been medically cleared to race, though he remains sore. As a precaution, Hendrick Motorsports has Anthony Alfredo, their simulator driver and Xfinity Series competitor, on standby to potentially serve as a relief driver during the Mexico City race.

Bowman has faced a challenging 2025 season, with the Michigan DNF marking his third of the year and his average finish over five weeks being 28.2, ranking him second-to-last among full-time drivers. His teammates Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, and William Byron finished 5th, 15th, and 28th respectively in Michigan, while Denny Hamlin won the race.
Despite the struggles, Bowman remains optimistic about turning his season around, citing strong support from Hendrick Motorsports leadership, including Jeff Gordon and Rick Hendrick. He believes the #48 team has the speed and quality to improve results moving forward.
The Viva Mexico 250 race will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime on June 15, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. ET.
