James Toney Names The Fighter Who Beats Canelo ‘Easily’ And It’s Not David Benavidez: “Trust Me”

In 66 fights, only two men have managed to beat Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.

Currently unified super-middleweight champion, Alvarez has held titles in four divisions and beaten the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Austin Trout, Danny Jacobs and Miguel Cotto.

He has fallen short against Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, both on points having never touched the canvas in his two-decade long career – a little like notoriously tough James Toney, a former 168 pound champion himself who was never stopped 92 fights.

Fresh off a routine win over Edgar Berlanga to defend his belts, talk has now turned to who Canelo faces next. There is and always will be a long line of potential challengers, with the current frontrunners in terms of intrigue being David Benavidez and Terence Crawford.

Speaking to AB Boxing News, Toney praised Crawford.

“Terence Crawford is an incredible fighter. It’s gonna be hard to beat him, anybody at 154.”

Asked specifically about the Canelo match-up, Toney was definitive in his response and also managed to sneak in a comparison to himself.

“Easy win [for Crawford]. Easy win. Trust me … Canelo is a good fighter, but he’s not on James Toney’s level.”

Whether or not Canelo puts that to the test remains to be seen. He has been relatively dismissive of the fight in the past and said that Crawford’s recent debut at super-welterweight, two divisions down from where he would need to be, was proof that there are weight classes for a reason.
