Jake Paul has set his sights on claiming the cruiserweight world title by 2025, marking a significant ambition in his professional boxing career. The YouTube personality-turned-boxer, known as “The Problem Child,” is currently preparing for a bout against MMA fighter Mike Perry, scheduled for July 20 in Florida, following a postponement of his much-anticipated match with boxing icon Mike Tyson due to medical concerns.
Despite having only faced one professional boxer, Tommy Fury, in his ten-fight career (where he holds a 9-1 record), Paul remains confident in his ability to achieve world championship status within the next year. In an interview with ESPN, he expressed his belief: “I believe in 2025 I will most likely be a world champion. I think I’m ready for it in the next couple of months and I’m going to go for it in 2025.”
Paul has fluctuated in weight throughout his career, ranging from 185 lbs up to cruiserweight. For the postponed Tyson fight, he had increased his weight to 230 lbs, though he considers 200 lbs to be his natural weight. Looking ahead, he emphasized that cruiserweight is where he feels most comfortable, stating, “Cruiserweight is what my body was made for. My punches aren’t the same [at lower weight classes]; I don’t have that power or pop.”
Currently, Paul is not ranked within the top 15 of any major sanctioning body’s cruiserweight rankings, which includes champions like Chris Billiam-Smith (WBO), Gilberto Ramirez (WBA), Norair Mikaeljan (WBC), and Jai Opetaia (IBF). This suggests that Paul has a challenging path ahead to earn a shot at the cruiserweight world title.
In recent matches, Paul secured a unanimous decision victory over MMA star Nate Diaz and achieved two first-round knockout wins against boxing veterans Andre August and Ryan Bourland. These victories have bolstered his confidence and profile within the boxing community as he continues to pursue his ambitious goal of becoming a world champion by 2025.
