Mike Tyson’s latest scheduled bout against Jake Paul has hit a snag, but an intriguing substitute may be stepping into the ring. Originally slated for July 20 at the iconic Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas, the fight has been postponed indefinitely due to Tyson experiencing health complications, specifically an ulcer flare-up, during a recent flight.
In light of this, former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. has expressed his interest in replacing Tyson. Jones, who previously went eight rounds with Tyson in an unscored exhibition bout four years ago, revealed his readiness to step up. “I’m kind of thinking about that. I might try and get into shape in case that happens,” Jones told Betway. “I never thought about doing it before, but with the situation of the fight, I think that’s a great idea. I’ll be ready and in shape because if the fight doesn’t happen, then the ideal guy to substitute in place of Mike Tyson to fight Jake Paul is something I have been thinking about.”
Jones, who officially retired six years ago, made a brief comeback last September in a special bout against ex-UFC champion Anthony Pettis, though he didn’t secure a win. Now at 55 years old, Jones is considering the possibility of facing Paul, spurred by the current circumstances. He also addressed rumors linking him to a match with Tommy Fury, one of Paul’s previous opponents, and mused over a potential exhibition bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
“I haven’t thought about that because me being me, I only think about being the best I can be and have never thought about that. Then I figure it out in the ring. There was obviously the Tommy Fury thing that came up, and then the other day, somebody asked me whether I would fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in an exhibition, and that’s crazy,” he continued. “I would jump on it, but now that this thing has come up, it makes sense to get into shape with Jake Paul, and it would be one of the biggest fights of this decade.”
Tyson, who is now proposing to reschedule his bout against Paul between October and December, might have to wait and see if Jones indeed steps in. As fans eagerly await the next move, Roy Jones Jr.’s willingness to enter the ring has added a fresh twist to an already much-anticipated showdown.
With Tyson’s health in focus and Jones ready to go, the boxing world is set for an exciting turn of events as Jake Paul looks for a new opponent. Whether it’s Tyson, Jones, or another surprise contender, the fight promises to be a spectacle worth waiting for.
