Christopher Bell’s return: From Frustration to Glory
In the competitive world of Nascar, Christopher Bell has emerged as one of the hottest riders in 2025 with a series of attractive consecutive victories. However, behind his recent success was a story about disappointment and acceptance, what shaped his relationship with the owner Joe Gibbs.

At the end of 2024, Bell went through a controversial event in MartinSville, when he was fined for acting in the wall in the last round, making his championship hope. Gibbs, the owner of his team, expressed deep disappointment when he told the press, “They said everything had ended … I was still trying to overcome that.” This event has left a deep impression in Bell’s heart.
Before joining the Nascar Cup Series, Bell built his reputation as a talent on the land race, winning many awards in Sprint and Midget races. He became the champion three times in Chili Bowl Nationals before entering the Series Cup. The transfer to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2021 triggered a complex emotional series, from dissatisfaction to relief.
However, Bell soon realized that Joe Gibbs was not a fans of land racing. Although Coy Gibbs, Joe’s son, supported Bell to join the land racing for the benefit of the development of driving skills, but after Coy died in 2022, everything changed. Joe Gibbs banned all JGR riders from participating in the land racing in the near future, partly due to the serious accident of Alex Bowman in a Kyle Larson event.
Bell had to sit and watch his colleagues continue to be passionate about the sport that helped him to be famous. He admitted that he felt a little dissatisfied when he said, “It made me uncomfortable … Sitting on the sofa to see the races, watching Kyle do all the interesting things I want to do.” “Kyle” here refers to Kyle Larson, the star of Hendrick Motorsports, who still maintains a competitive land racing schedule with his Nascar commitments – a freedom that Bell is clearly jealous.
These limitations come from Joe Gibbs Racing’s conservative philosophy of external racing activities. When asked about these limitations in previous interviews, Gibbs always emphasized the safety of the racer and focused on the obligations of the Series Cup, saying that “our main responsibility is to sponsors and the championship race.”
The path to Bell’s acceptance is not quickly. “It takes a little time for me to overcome,” he explained. “Not until the end of 2023 … When I finally found peace with myself and accepted that the land racing was not my choice right now.” This time is especially notable because it coincides with Bell’s breakthrough season in 2023, when he reached Championship 4 in a row after winning the playoffs – perhaps proving that Gibbs’s focus philosophy is right, despite Bell’s disappointment.
However, everything has changed since 2023. At the end of 2024, Joe Gibbs finally announced that JGR riders will be allowed to join the land racing again. What has changed? It was another situation in the leading family. Gibbs’s grandson, Gibbs, is also part of JGR, showed his love for land racing, and this made Joe Gibbs change his decision. The addition of Chase Briscoe, another land racing enthusiast, has made a change in the garage when 3/4 riders want to participate outside Nascar.
When Bell won at Tulsa Shootout recently, he said, “I have four words. Thank you, Joe Gibbs!” The change in the heart of the team has brought new vitality to a superstar preparing for the return. In 2024, it also marked the first time in the playoff era that every JGR racer did not enter the Championship 4.
Now, while winning and establishing himself as a champion candidate in 2025, Bell’s view has changed: “Now I can enjoy a bit of joy and just take my mind out of the Cup series’s race.” The dissatisfaction that once weighed on him has turned into an acceptance, can liberate him mentally to reach new heights in Nascar’s top race, while his recent appearances in local races show a change in Gibbs’s strict viewpoint.
Bell has another breakthrough year. He became the first racer to win three consecutive victories in the Cup Series since Kyle Larson in 2021. He is also the first racer to win three of the first four races of the season since Kevin Harvick in 2018. This significant rise coincides with his return to the land racing is not a coincidence but a sign that returns to his source always brings you the best for you.
