Bubba Wallace Reflects on Impact & Diversity in NASCAR: “I’m One That’s Here”

Bubba Wallace, a prominent NASCAR Cup Series driver, recently shared his reflections on entering the sport as the first full-time Black driver in nearly seven years. His journey, significantly aided by NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program, highlights the sport’s ongoing efforts to broaden its appeal and create opportunities for drivers and crew members from diverse backgrounds.

Wallace debuted in the Cup Series in 2017, driving the iconic No. 43 car for Richard Petty Motorsports. His full-time presence from the following year marked a significant step for diversity within NASCAR. In a 2018 interview, Wallace articulated NASCAR’s goal of expanding its fanbase without alienating existing supporters, stating, “They want to just bring a bigger impact to the outsiders that are looking in. Because it is a fun sport.”

Wallace’s success on the track, including a second-place finish in his debut Daytona 500 in 2018, has further amplified his impact.

NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program has played a crucial role in fostering inclusivity. Rajah Caruth’s Truck Series victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last year, during the program’s 20th anniversary, exemplifies its success. Wallace himself is a product of the program, having won six Truck Series races, beginning with his first win at Daytona International Speedway in 2013.

The program’s reach extends beyond drivers. In 2017, Brehanna Daniels made history as the first Black woman tire changer in NASCAR, showcasing the program’s commitment to diversifying all aspects of the sport.

Now in his ninth full-time NASCAR Cup Series season, driving for 23XI Racing (owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan), Wallace has his sights set on the ultimate achievement: induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. “They ask, ‘What’s your ultimate goal?’ I always say, ‘I want to be in the NASCAR Hall of Fame!'” Wallace stated in 2018. He understands that winning is the key to achieving this goal.

After two winless seasons, Wallace secured a victory in one of the Daytona 500 dual races this season, bringing him closer to achieving his ambition.
