‘I’m Sorry’: Lia Thomas, Transgender Athlete, Announces Exit From Women’s Sports After IWSF Deems Her “ineligible To Participate”

After months of controversy and criticism, transgender swimmer Lia Thomas has finally announced her retirement from women’s sports. The decision comes after the International Water Sports Federation (IWSF) ruled that she was “ineligible” to compete in women’s competitions.

“I’m sorry,” Thomas said in a brief statement. “I just want to swim.”

The statement sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Some praised Thomas for “doing the right thing,” while others criticized her for “usurping” female athletes’ spots.

“Finally, justice has been served,” wrote one Twitter user. “Women’s sports are for women.”

“It’s sad that Lia Thomas had to give up her dream,” wrote another. “She should be allowed to compete like everyone else.”

The IWSF said it made the ruling based on new rules designed to ensure “fairness” in women’s sports. The rules require transgender athletes to undergo a certain waiting period and maintain their testosterone levels below a certain threshold.

“We believe these new rules are fair and reasonable,” an IWSF spokesperson said. “We want to ensure that all athletes have an equal opportunity to compete.”

It is unclear whether Thomas will continue to compete in men’s competitions. What is certain, however, is that her decision has sparked a heated debate about transgender athletes in sports.

And in a related development, Thomas also announced that she is writing a book about her experiences as a transgender athlete. “It’s going to be called ‘Unfair,’” Thomas said. “And it’s coming out tomorrow.”

We will continue to follow this story and update you as more information becomes available.
