“I’M SORRY FOR DISAPPOINTING EVERYONE” – Rory McIlroy Speaks Out After Club-Slamming Incident at the 2025 US Open
Rory McIlroy has broken his silence following a wave of criticism after a heated outburst during the second round of the 2025 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

The 35-year-old Northern Irish golfer, known for his composed demeanor and sportsmanship, shocked fans and commentators alike when he angrily slammed his golf club to the ground, visibly bending it after a missed approach shot on the 13th hole. The incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage among fans and golf purists who labeled the action “rude,” “unprofessional,” and “disrespectful to the spirit of the game.”

In a public statement released late Friday, McIlroy addressed the backlash head-on:
“I’m sorry for disappointing everyone. The frustration got the better of me, and I let my emotions take over in a way that was not appropriate—especially on a stage as prestigious as the US Open.”
McIlroy explained that a string of poor shots had built up tension throughout the round. Despite high expectations coming into the tournament, he struggled with accuracy and rhythm on the back nine.
“It was a tough day. I’ve worked so hard preparing for this tournament, and I felt like things were slipping away. That’s no excuse, though—I should’ve handled it better,” he added.
While many fans expressed disappointment, others came to his defense, highlighting the emotional pressure top athletes endure. Former PGA champion Justin Thomas commented: “We’ve all been there. It’s easy to judge from the outside, but these moments show the human side of the sport.”
The USGA has not issued a disciplinary response, though sources say a fine could be levied for unsportsmanlike conduct.
McIlroy concluded his statement with a renewed commitment to the game:
“Golf has given me so much, and I deeply respect everything the sport stands for. I’ll use this moment as a reminder to carry myself with the grace and professionalism the game deserves.”
McIlroy is expected to continue in the tournament using a replacement club, but all eyes will now be on how he regroups mentally and emotionally in the rounds ahead.
