Financial tensions do not stop KTM, which has started two days of private tests at the Jerez circuit in Spain. Despite the serious economic crisis that threatens the Austrian giant with a debt of almost 3 billion euros and the risk of 3,600 layoffs, the development team continues to work on the RC16 prototype for the 2025 MotoGP season.

The tests feature Dani Pedrosa, a highly experienced rider who was recently confirmed as a test rider for 2025, and Pol Espargaro, who retired from racing at the end of 2023 to join the KTM test team. The two are on track to perfect the aerodynamics chosen by Pedro Acosta, the young Spanish talent considered the future of KTM. Although Acosta did not participate in the tests, he helped direct the development of the prototype during the summer break.
During these sessions, Pedrosa and Espargaro are testing the latest technical updates before development is put on hold due to financial uncertainty, with a resumption scheduled for February 2024. The new aerodynamic and technical solutions will be key for the RC16 model, set to compete in the 2025 MotoGP season.
Despite the financial problems, KTM confirms that the MotoGP project is still a priority. However, the future beyond 2026 is uncertain, especially because of the new technical rules that will come into force in 2027, imposing the development of a new bike. This situation also worries KTM riders, such as Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta, tied to the team by long-term contracts.
KTM’s crisis could open the doors to a sensational change of team for Pedro Acosta. According to rumors, Ducati, with the support of Dorna, is trying to convince the young talent to move to the Borgo Panigale factory. However, the Ducati team has few places available: the only opportunity could be in the VR46 team, but only starting from the end of 2025.
Meanwhile, good news comes from Fabio Di Giannantonio, who is recovering from surgery on his left shoulder. The Italian, who recently visited the MotoGP paddock during the Barcelona tests, plans to return to the track in early 2025, although he will not be 100% fit for the first tests.
The Jerez test represents a crucial moment for KTM, which is looking to demonstrate resilience despite financial difficulties. With Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro busy perfecting the RC16 prototype, and Pedro Acosta’s future at the centre of speculation, the 2025 MotoGP season already promises to be full of twists and turns.
