HOT NEWS: Floyd Mayweather Breaks Silence on Crawford vs. Canelo: ‘Dangerous Move’

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. has finally broken his silence on the rumored mega-fight between Terence “Bud” Crawford and Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, and his verdict is clear: it’s a “dangerous move” that could have serious consequences for both fighters—especially Crawford.

Speaking during a media appearance in Las Vegas on Saturday, Mayweather addressed the buzz surrounding the potential bout that could see two of boxing’s most skilled pound-for-pound champions face off later this year.

“It’s a very dangerous move for Crawford, but also for Canelo. You’re talking about two great fighters, but two very different styles and sizes. This isn’t just a superfight. This is a gamble,” Mayweather said.

A Clash of Titans?

The idea of a Crawford vs. Canelo showdown has set the boxing world ablaze. Crawford, the former undisputed champion at 140 lbs and current WBO welterweight king, is riding high after his dominant win over Errol Spence Jr. Meanwhile, Canelo remains a global superstar and four-division champion, currently campaigning at super middleweight (168 lbs).

Despite the nearly 20-pound natural weight difference, talks of the fight being made at a catchweight have been circulating for months. Fans are drooling at the thought of seeing two technical masters with elite ring IQ square off.

Mayweather, who fought both men in the past—Canelo in 2013 and sparred with Crawford early in his career—knows firsthand what both are capable of. His warning, however, was particularly aimed at Crawford.

“I love Crawford’s skills. He’s sharp, smart, one of the best I’ve ever seen. But weight classes exist for a reason. You go up too far, and your timing, your power, even your punch resistance—it all changes,” Mayweather cautioned.

Mayweather: “Canelo’s No Joke”

Mayweather emphasized that Canelo is not only powerful but also experienced against bigger men. Over the years, Canelo has fought and beaten larger opponents like Sergey Kovalev, Callum Smith, and Caleb Plant. His only recent loss came against the much bigger light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

“Canelo’s no joke at 168. People forget—he’s built for that weight. He’s comfortable, strong, and still fast. If Crawford goes up, he has to be ready to take shots from a real 168-pounder. That’s not easy, no matter how talented you are,” said Mayweather.

At the same time, the undefeated former champion did not dismiss Crawford’s chances entirely. He acknowledged Crawford’s unique adaptability and killer instinct.

“Bud’s a dog. He’s got that switch in him. If anyone could pull it off, it’s him. But it’s still dangerous. It could turn into a chess match… or a nightmare,” he added.

Fan Reactions and Industry Buzz

Reactions across the boxing world have been split. Some experts believe Crawford’s speed, precision, and footwork could pose major problems for Canelo, who has struggled against slick boxers in the past. Others argue that the size disparity is simply too great, even for someone as talented as Crawford.

Andre Ward, former light heavyweight champion and close friend of Crawford, said in a recent interview:

“Bud isn’t doing this for clout. He sees something in Canelo. He studies everyone. If he takes this fight, it’s because he knows he can win.”

On the other hand, Teddy Atlas, renowned trainer and analyst, expressed concern:

“Crawford might be biting off too much. Canelo is a killer with body shots. If Bud can’t hurt him, it’s going to be a long night.”

What’s Next?

As of now, there is no official confirmation from either fighter’s camp, though both have hinted at mutual interest. Crawford recently posted on social media: “Legacy fights only from now on.” Canelo, in turn, told Mexican media: “I’m open to anyone who brings a real challenge.”

Promoters are reportedly discussing a possible Las Vegas superfight in November or December, potentially at the Allegiant Stadium or T-Mobile Arena. If finalized, it could be one of the biggest boxing events of the decade.

For Mayweather, who’s watched the sport evolve from inside and outside the ring, the outcome is unpredictable—but his message is clear:

“This is one of those fights where history can be made—or careers can be changed forever. If it happens, I’ll be watching like everyone else. But Crawford better know: this ain’t Errol Spence. This is Canelo. It’s a whole different beast.”
