Mallorca, Spain-The whole world knows Rafael Nadal as a legend of tennis: an icon which won Roland-Garros 14 times and which has built a heritage of humility and determination. But a very personal story, hidden for two decades, has been revealed and affects fans around the world.
This time, these are not great chelems or gold medals. It is an act of silent humanity that ended a cycle unexpectedly and deeply moving.
🕯️ This forgotten night that has changed everything
It was summer 2004, and Nadal, then 18, was just starting to find a place on the ATP circuit. One evening, after a training session in Mallorca, he decided to go for a car in the vicinity of his hometown.
It was then that he saw something that stopped him: two small silhouettes huddled under a tree, almost invisible in the light of the moon.
These were two twins, barely five years old, visibly abandoned, barefoot and trembling. Without hesitation, Rafa stopped, called for help and stayed with them until the emergency services. He wrapped them in his sports jacket, offered them water and assured them that they were safe.
He spent the whole night with them in the hospital. He never talked about it to the press. He never talked about it again.
🎥 20 years later: a surprise visit that moved everyone
This week, during a charity event at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Nadal was invited to participate in a special session. What he was unaware is that two women were going to enter, holding a faded photo from 2004: two young girls wrapped in a giant Nike jacket.
“Rafa … you may not remember us, but you saved us. You gave us a chance when no one else would have done so. And today we come back to thank you … with something very special. »»
The public is silent. Nadal, visibly moved, could not hold back his tears by hugging them.
The sisters revealed to have created a non -profit association, “Rafa has saved us”, dedicated to the support of abandoned children and in danger worldwide. With the help of sponsors and donors, they donated one million euros to Nadal to develop the programs of his academy intended for vulnerable young people.
The first project: a refuge and a training center for girls in the rural areas of Spain, called«Nadal house ».
🗣️ “He gave us a future – now we share it with others”
In an interview full of tears, one of the sisters said:
“We do not remember the face of our parents, but we remember Rafa. We remember his smile, his calm voice that told us that everything would be fine. He gave us hope, and now we transmit it to others. »»
