LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, USA – May 4, 2024 – Canelo Álvarez defended his undisputed super middleweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena.
Álvarez (62-1-2, 39 KOs) knocked down Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) with a left uppercut in the fourth round and controlled the fight from there. He landed 234 of 536 punches (44%), while Munguia landed 170 of 663 punches (26%).
The judges scored the fight 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112 for Álvarez.
The victory was Álvarez’s ninth defense of his super middleweight titles. He has now won 19 consecutive fights.
Munguia, a 27-year-old rising star from Mexico, suffered his first professional defeat. He had won his previous 43 fights, 34 of them by knockout.
“I’m very happy with the victory,” Álvarez said through a translator. “I knew it was going to be a tough fight, but I trained hard and I was prepared.”
Álvarez said he plans to take a break before returning to the ring later this year.
“I need some time to rest and recover,” he said. “But I’m already looking forward to my next fight.”
Munguia said he was disappointed with the loss, but he is not giving up on his dream of becoming a world champion.
“I learned a lot from this fight,” he said. “I’m going to come back stronger and I’m going to be a champion one day.”
The fight was a close and entertaining affair. Both fighters had their moments, but Álvarez was the more consistent and accurate puncher. He was also able to use his size and experience to his advantage.
