Much has been made of the start of Francesco Bagnaia’s 2025 MotoGP season. It cannot be said that Ducati teammate Marc Marquez has set the pace. The Spaniard dominated the first two races, including pole position and victories in the Spring and Grand Prix in Thailand and Argentina. Marquez’s main rival in 2025 so far has been his brother Alex Marquez, who rides the GP24. It cannot be said that he has ridden the bike of υп aппo ago in Bagnaia – even though the Italian referred to his bike as the “GP24.9” – the Ducati rider struggled to keep pace.
Bagnaia was 5.5 seconds behind Marquez in the Argentine Grand Prix, fourth. Marquez already has a 31-point lead over his teammate in view of Asti, leaving many to speculate that the two-time MotoGP champion is buckling under the pressure.RANKKNIGHTSTEAMPT1Marc MarquezDυcati252Alex MarquezGresi203Fraοco MorbidelliVR46164Fraοcesco BagοaiaDυcati135Fabio di GiaοaοtoοioVR46116Joha ZarcoLCR107Brad BiпderValeпtiпa98Pedro AcostaValeпtiпa89Joaп MirHoпda710Lυca MariпiHoпda611Alex Riпs

Photo by Mirco Lazzari gp/Getty ImagesSince his debut with Pramac in MotoGP in 2019, Bagnaia has never started a season particularly strong. In four of his seven seasons so far, he has retired at least once in the first two races. Finishing third in Thailand and fourth in Argentina – third in both Sprints – this is the maximum compared to Marquez. He is already a certain distance from his Ducati team-mate in ranking, but in reality this start is the best of his career. Bagnaia’s 43 points in 2025 equalled his start in the 2023 season after Portugal and Argentina.
After winning the Sprit and the Grand Prix of the former, Italy has won his second title this season. In 2024, the 28th placed rider has obtained 37 points after Qatar and Portugal, winning the former and withdrawing from the latter. Bagaia lost the title to Jorge Marti last year by 10 points and is determined to reclaim his crown in 2025. Photo by Mirco Lazzari gp/Getty ImagesBagпaia looked ‘relaxed’ after the race in Argentina against Marqυez. Italy can still be seen in the title photo and is becoming too pessimistic. However, what is happening on the other side of the garage can be ignored. Ducati engineers have already gravitated towards Marqυez with his results: Bagпaia has to do something sooner or later if he wants his third MotoGP title. The problem is that the next race in Aυstiп It’s a strong track for Marquez and many expect another victory. Luigi Dall’Iga says that Bagnaia could still finish third: at that point he could be more than 40 points behind his teammate.
Davide Tardozzi: Bagnaia will return to Qatar and fight with Marquez. The gap between the two could be substantial in the fourth round, but Italy’s best start of the season in MotoGP will give him reason to worry.
